Daniel Arsham Designs Kohler Bath Collection + a Cabin to Go With It
Kohler, a company known for its high-quality design, has partnered with New York-based contemporary artist Daniel Arsham to create an immersive luxury lifestyle experience. This collaboration, titled "Arsham in Kohler," integrates Arsham's distinctive artistic vision with Kohler's design heritage, offering a fresh perspective on luxury living and resort experiences. The partnership encompasses several key elements, including six large-scale sculptures displayed across the Kohler resort property, a bespoke luxury guest cabin overlooking Lake Michigan, and a specially designed bathroom collection named "Landshapes."
The centerpiece of this collaboration is the Arsham Cabin, part of the Kohler Cabin Collection, which functions as a private luxury retreat. Guests staying at the cabin can fully immerse themselves in Arsham’s artistic world, with his art and design principles seamlessly integrated throughout the space. Conveniently located a short drive from the American Club resort-hotel and in proximity to the renowned Whistling Straits golf course, the cabin is designed to accommodate four guests. It features two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a comfortable living area, and a fully equipped kitchen. Thoughtful amenities enhance the guest experience, such as a stocked pantry filled with Arsham’s preferred items, a cozy wood-burning fireplace, and a wrap-around porch that provides expansive views of the lake and a serene zen garden.
Beyond just accommodation, the Arsham Cabin offers a comprehensive experience, granting guests access to the resort's extensive amenities. These include the Sports Core Health & Racquet Club and the River Wildlife wilderness preserve, which offers a range of outdoor activities like hiking and fishing. This unique combination of art, nature, and luxury creates an unparalleled environment for guests.
Arsham's "Landshapes" collection for Kohler, prominently featured within the cabin, draws inspiration from natural forms. The designs incorporate Arsham's signature artistic motifs, such as elements that suggest water droplets and chiseled textures. The collection includes a hand-carved freestanding tub and distinctively designed vanities, both reflecting Arsham's travels to Japan and Japanese chinoiserie aesthetics. Further pieces in the "Landshapes" collection include a vessel sink, which evolved from Arsham’s previous "Rock.01" sink creation, and glass faucet handles designed to mimic the appearance of water droplets. Additionally, the collection features Kohler’s Veil Smart toilet, whose design evokes natural erosion, a characteristic style of Arsham’s work, alongside organically shaped mirrors and lighting fixtures. The "Landshapes" collection is anticipated to be available for commercial purchase later in the year.
The Kohler resort property is also home to six of Arsham’s large-scale public sculptures, strategically positioned to encourage visitors to explore and reflect. These installations are spread across Destination Kohler’s grounds, including its golf courses and resort areas. The sculptures on display include "Bronze Eroded Leica Camera," "Bronze Eroded Porsche 911," "Pokemon and Trainer," "Amalgamized head of Hermes of Olympia," an unearthed head of Melpomene, and a "Bronze Eroded Venus de Milo." These sculptures are intended to provoke discussion and encourage viewers to perceive golf and its surrounding landscape from a new artistic perspective.
Arsham notes that incorporating his sculptures into the golf landscape aims to foster conversations about creative expression within golf, highlighting the inherent artistic, architectural, and sculptural qualities of the game. The collaboration seeks to create an atmosphere where unexpected wonders appear, offering moments of surprise and inviting guests and the community to engage with the environment from a fresh viewpoint. In addition to the cabin, the bathroom collection, and the sculpture installations, Arsham also collaborated with Stephen Malbon on a merchandise collection for the lifestyle golf apparel brand Malbon, all forming part of the comprehensive "Arsham in Kohler" project.
