Review: The Philips Hue Outdoor Lightstrip With HomeKit Integration Lights Up Your Backyard
The Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance Outdoor Lightstrip is an accent lighting solution designed to extend the functionality of indoor smart lighting to outdoor spaces. The product, available in 80-inch ($89.99) and 197-inch ($160) versions, is weatherproof and suitable for balconies, patios, and backyards. Unlike its indoor counterpart, the outdoor lightstrip features LEDs protected by an opaque silicone cover. This design choice diffuses the light more effectively, creating a continuous light strand appearance, which is a significant aesthetic improvement over the uncovered LEDs of the indoor version. The silicone-covered design allows the lightstrip to be used as a prominent lighting element rather than just background accent lighting, suitable for pathways, railings, or fences.
Constructed from a flexible material, the Outdoor Lightstrip can be manipulated into various shapes, though it cannot be fully bent or cut. This limitation is a direct consequence of its waterproof design, preventing customization options like cutting to size or connecting multiple strips, which are available with indoor models. The lightstrip is highly durable, built to withstand rain, snow, and other harsh weather conditions within an operational temperature range of -4 to 113 degrees Fahrenheit. It includes a heavy-duty, weatherproof power supply and an extra-long two-piece cord, making it resistant to outdoor elements. While the diffuse light is appealing, the extensive and bulky cord and power supply make it less ideal for indoor use, despite the superior light diffusion.
Installation of the Outdoor Lightstrip does not involve adhesive. Instead, Signify provides mounting brackets and screws for secure attachment to various outdoor surfaces like fences or overhangs. The lightstrip itself is relatively slim, measuring 0.78 inches tall and 0.43 inches wide. Despite its diffuse light, it is sufficiently bright for atmospheric outdoor lighting. The lumen output varies by color temperature, ranging from 900 lumens at 6500K (cool white) to 740 lumens at 2000K (warm yellow). As a White and Color Ambiance product, it supports a wide spectrum of 16 million colors and various white light temperatures, though the purple shade is noted to be less vibrant. The lightstrip can only display one color at a time across its entire length.
To use the Outdoor Lightstrip, a Philips Hue Bridge is required, which acts as a central hub for all Hue devices. The setup process involves adding the lightstrip through the Hue app after ensuring the Bridge is connected to a Wi-Fi router. The lightstrip must be within approximately 64 feet of the Hue Bridge or the nearest Hue light for connectivity. The Hue app provides comprehensive control over brightness, color, and organization into rooms. It also allows for the creation of scenes and automation routines, enabling scheduling based on time, sunrise/sunset, or home presence. Remote control is possible when signed into a Hue account.
HomeKit integration is seamless, with the Hue Bridge making all connected Hue lights immediately available as HomeKit accessories. This enables control through the Home app, including basic brightness and color adjustments, and Siri voice commands for turning lights on/off, dimming, or changing colors using standardized X11 color names. HomeKit also allows for advanced automations, such as triggering the lightstrip with motion detectors or integrating it with other HomeKit devices, offering more granular control than the Hue app's routines. The Outdoor Lightstrip is also compatible with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Nest, and Samsung SmartThings. While not a standalone purchase for new users, it is a valuable addition to an existing Hue setup, providing aesthetically pleasing and functional outdoor accent lighting despite its premium price point and size limitations.
