How Alchemy Design Studio Is Conquering The Egyptian Design Scene
Alchemy Design Studio, a pioneering Cairo-based interior design and architecture firm, has significantly influenced the Egyptian design landscape since its inception in 1997. Founded by architect-designer Karim Mekhtigian, with later contributions from Mohamed Fares and Eman Hussein, the studio specializes in product design, interior solutions, and residential and commercial architecture. Mekhtigian, with Armenian heritage and a decade of study in Paris, brought a unique blend of cultural influences and technical expertise back to Cairo, initially focusing on promoting local design through initiatives like the Egyptian stand at Salone del mobile in 2009. His vision was to create designs that transcended superficial aesthetics, aiming to embed narratives and essence into every project element.
The studio expanded its offerings significantly over the years. In 2003, Alchemy launched its first showroom in Maadi, broadening its scope to include residential, commercial, and corporate projects. By 2008, branding, design, and retail management were integrated into their services. A major milestone occurred in 2010 with the launch of their exclusive furniture brand, Alchemy Cairo, and the opening of a large showroom at Egypt’s Designopolis Mall, featuring international designers like Francesco Rota alongside Mekhtigian’s own creations. Eman Hussein joined the team in 2011, quickly ascending to Art Director, and brought her fascination with morphing forms and the evolving nature of designed spaces, emphasizing that a space continues to alter its reality once life is injected into it.
The name 'Alchemy' itself holds deep significance, deriving from the Egyptian word 'Kyme' and reflecting the ancient practice of transforming materials into something precious, akin to turning base metals into gold. This philosophy underpins their design approach, which draws heavily from Egypt’s rich historical and cultural movements—spanning ancient Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Ptolemaic, Islamic, and Ottoman periods. Mekhtigian explains that these diverse elements are reinterpreted to form the central theme of their designs, ensuring that each piece carries a cultural narrative and timeless appeal, rather than merely following fleeting trends.
In 2013, Alchemy Architecture was established, focusing on large-scale architectural endeavors. A notable project was the Seashell North Coast in El Alamein, a beachfront compound featuring both residential spaces and the luxurious G Hotel. This project, a collaboration with Harvest Cotton Tale and Lunar Jetman, aimed to introduce a new architectural language to the North Coast, characterized by disentangled forms that allow air flow and integrate indoor and outdoor spaces seamlessly. Another significant restoration project involved the historic Groppi café near Tahrir Square, where the studio meticulously revived the space using archival materials to ensure an authentic experience, a project particularly valued by Fares.
The Designopolis showroom exemplified their design philosophy, displaying a collection that highlighted the cultural depth behind each product, ensuring their relevance despite changing times. Mekhtigian’s 'Infinity Kato' sofa, inspired by his Egyptian heritage and global travels, serves as an example of designs that are both contemporary and deeply rooted in history. Collaborations with designers like Christophe Pillet and Francesco Rota further enriched Alchemy’s perspective, fostering a cross-cultural exchange that results in innovative and sophisticated products. Alchemy Design Studio continues to evolve, constantly pushing boundaries and manifesting lifestyles inspired by urban narratives, always maintaining an element of surprise in their upcoming projects.
