The Magic of ADAPTIVE’s 8 Layers of Lighting Design
The article discusses the increasing importance of lighting design expertise for integrators as the lighting category gains prevalence. It highlights that merely installing numerous recessed lights without a thoughtful approach can lead to unprofessional results and a disservice to homeowners. Glenn Merlin Johnson of Adaptive Design Group, a renowned lighting designer with 38 years of experience in luxury residential lighting, has developed the ADAPTIVE Method® to address this. This trademarked method identifies eight distinct layers of lighting, offering a structured approach to architectural lighting design and the application of integrated dimming technology.
Johnson's methodology aims to help integrators effectively communicate the value of quality lighting design and products, coupled with integrated dimming controls, to clients. Adaptive Design Group specializes exclusively in luxury residential design and engineering, refraining from product supply or distribution. Johnson's book, "The Art of Illumination," is utilized in 25 colleges and universities, underscoring his influence in the field. He emphasizes that true lighting design is about the art of illumination, integrating the latest products and technology to create environments that enhance architecture, art, colors, furnishings, and finishes, rather than creating glare.
He points out a common pitfall where architects' plans often include generic lighting and electrical elements, leading to a lack of artistry. Poor lighting, he argues, can undermine the aesthetic of a high-value home, often making it appear over-illuminated. Johnson advocates for a comprehensive design team that extends beyond architects and interior designers to include a seasoned lighting designer and a CEDIA integrator. This 'Technical Team' is crucial for guiding owners, architects, and interior designers through complex lighting applications, especially in large residential projects.
Each of the eight layers in the ADAPTIVE Method® focuses on a specific aspect of lighting, with the acronym ADAPTIVE corresponding to: Architecture, Decorative, Art, Path, Task, Interior Decoration, View, and Exterior. The Architecture layer involves coordinating ceiling designs and adding indirect illumination to maximize space and softly graze features like beams and stone walls. The Decorative layer refers to the aesthetic fixtures that act as "jewelry" for the home, contributing to its overall look and feel rather than primary illumination. The Art layer focuses on the precise illumination of artwork, coordinating potential art locations with the design team. Path lighting ensures clear and subtle navigation through spaces, while Task lighting illuminates functional areas like vanities and kitchen islands with appropriate color temperatures and CRI. The Interior Decoration layer integrates lighting with furniture, colors, and finishes, emphasizing the importance of lighting conversation areas over directly illuminating people to avoid harsh shadows. The View layer addresses the often-overlooked aspect of lighting the exterior landscape visible from inside, transforming windows from mirrors into extensions of the interior at night. Finally, the Exterior layer extends lighting to planting areas, pools, and other outdoor features, creating depth and further extending the home's enjoyment.
Johnson concludes that modern homeowners are increasingly educated about lighting design, and with CEDIA members gaining direct access to architectural lighting products, integrators are well-positioned to collaborate with specialized lighting designers. He highlights that the ADAPTIVE Method® is easily understood by clients, focusing on the artistic impact of illumination rather than technical specifications. When executed properly, good lighting design enhances the living experience, and when neglected, it becomes a noticeable distraction. This collaborative approach, involving a seasoned lighting designer and CEDIA Integrator, is presented as the pathway to successful projects and satisfied clients.
