This Lake Michigan House Was Built With Summertime In Mind
This article features a tour of Florida designer Dana Small's summer home in Ludington, Michigan, known as Beachview Cottage. The property, passed down through her husband's family, was rebuilt to accommodate a large family and frequent guests. The original early-1900s cottage was dilapidated, leading to the decision to construct a new 4,500-square-foot bungalow designed for longevity and social gatherings. The new house, which can sleep 22 people across five bedrooms, six baths, and three overflow bunk spaces, has become a community hub, hosting frequent get-togethers, including a weekly margarita day.
Small chose a blue and white color palette for the home, inspired by the varied shades of the lake water and sky from June to October. She specifically selected a strong, painter's tape-like blue as a central hue. While the previous cottage had a red, white, and blue theme, Small opted for a more sophisticated blue and white scheme, a design she frequently employs for clients at her store, Matilda’s, in Stuart, Florida. She incorporates unexpected pops of color, such as a lime-green floor, contrasting tiles, or vibrant pink hydrangeas, to add surprise to each room.
Texture is a significant element throughout the home, with walls and ceilings adorned with tile, nickel-gap wood, shiplap, or beadboard, or covered in wallpaper. Small avoids drywall to add depth and charm without over-busying the spaces. She follows a rule of using no more than two patterns per room, emphasizing bold stripes—a signature design stamp—and polka dots in unexpected areas like kitchen walls, which she believes evoke a beach aesthetic.
One of the favorite spaces in the house is the "cabana," located on the first floor directly off the water. This area is designed for casual, indoor/outdoor living, where guests can enjoy games, cocktails, and impromptu meals. Small, who enjoys cooking and frequents farmer's markets, designed the two fully stocked kitchens to be highly functional, making it easy to prepare meals for varying numbers of guests. Her culinary delights include innovative cocktails, mocktails for children, dishes like rainbow chard salad with dried blueberries and microgreens, locally raised beef with avocado dipping sauce, and fresh blueberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream, utilizing local produce from nearby farms and an ice cream factory. The home, with its bright and colorful cabana space, is described as a place of great cheer and hospitality, reflecting its purpose as a vibrant summer retreat.
