Interior Designer Daniel Östman’s Take on Denim
Swedish interior designer Daniel Östman has partnered with Scandinavian denim brand Jeanerica to introduce an innovative use of denim in home interiors. The collaboration, which will see the sale of a capsule collection in early March, reimagines denim beyond its traditional apparel context, presenting it as a sophisticated and evolving fabric for furniture. This marks Jeanerica’s second ‘Atelier’ project, an initiative designed to explore the artistic potential of denim.
Östman, known for his luxury residential projects, furniture line, and collaborations with brands like Acne Studios, emphasizes denim's unique characteristic of aging gracefully and developing character over time. This property, which is unusual for interior fabrics, allows the material to become "cooler" with continued use, much like a pair of well-worn jeans. He has been actively seeking such a denim fabric to integrate into his custom-made furniture pieces for private clients.
For this capsule collection, Östman designed four stools, meticulously crafted by Swedish artisans specializing in high-end sofas. Each stool incorporates advanced spring technology for comfort and durability and is upholstered in various denim materials, showcasing different aesthetics: white raw denim, splash-treated denim, seamed denim, and washed denim. This variety highlights the versatility of the fabric in interior applications.
Jeanerica, cofounded in 2017 by H&M; veterans Lena Patriksson Keller and Jonas Clason, is recognized for its innovative techniques and commitment to sustainability. The brand's denim is made from organic cotton, and its washing processes prioritize water conservation, aligning with modern environmental concerns. Clason noted the historical prominence of Swedish denim in the 2000s, where brands like Nudie and Acne Jeans gained global acclaim for their clean, cutting-edge styles and famous slim fits. Jeanerica continues this legacy by offering modern yet classic women’s and men’s collections crafted from organic denim and cotton, complemented by T-shirts and sweatshirts made from biological cotton, all contributing to the brand's sustainable ethos.
Keller articulated the vision for Jeanerica as a comprehensive "universe around denim," supported by a controlled supply chain and an industrial setup. This foundation is crucial for collaborations like the one with Östman, enabling the brand to operate with the integrated approach of a luxury fashion house while pushing the boundaries of denim's application into new domains such as home design.
