This Spanish Mission-Style Home Embodies Cozy, Eclectic Design
The article delves into the eclectic and cozy design of Melany and Drew Robinson's Spanish Mission-style home in Birmingham, Alabama. Built in 1935, the four-bedroom, four-bathroom residence, spanning 3,306 square feet, was designed by interior designer Fran Keenan of Fran Keenan Design Studio. The Robinsons, co-owners of Sprouthouse Agency, purchased the home in late 2020, drawn to its historical character, location in the Hollywood neighborhood of Homewood, and the fact that it required only cosmetic updates rather than a major overhaul. Keenan's design philosophy for the home emphasized a "no-rules mentality" in collecting and gathering pieces that hold personal value and cherished memories for the family, blending old and new, antiques and mid-century items.
The exterior of the home features southern plantings by Father Nature Landscapes, including Boxwood, Autumn Fern, and Dwarf Mondo, chosen to complement the Spanish Mission-style architecture with clean lines and low plantings. Hanging ferns provide shade to the front loggia. Inside, the living room is highlighted by Melany as her favorite space due to its coziness and the cherished pieces it contains. Keenan created a vibrant and cozy atmosphere using multiple layers of patterns, notably Schumacher drapes with the Chiang Mai Dragon design. An Oly Studios glass "bubble" chandelier serves as a focal point, and the yellowish-green ceiling color was chosen to reflect the window treatments. The living room also features a rust-colored cotton velvet sofa, midcentury Italian chairs in powder blue chenille, a large diamond-patterned sisal rug, and layered antique rugs for added texture and color. A hand-sewn American flag quilt by Natalie Chanin hangs above a rustic wooden table, showcasing the Robinsons' art collection.
The kitchen and den are combined into a single, spacious area with high ceilings, large windows, and ample natural light. The kitchen primarily features a white color palette with stainless steel appliances. Keenan softened the space by skirting the butcher-block island with gray linen fabric, which also conceals kitchen equipment. A custom wood shelf with brass brackets was installed above the sink for practical and aesthetic purposes. The den, flowing from the kitchen, offers a cozy space with a white slip-covered sofa and double French doors leading to the backyard. Artwork, including a large painting by Butch Anthony, and a striking installation of magnolia tree branches by floral artist Zachary Westall adorning the stair railing, add to the den's character.
The dining room, located between the kitchen and living room, features a narrow Belgian oak table, midcentury dining chairs upholstered in Kelly Wearstler fabric, and blue-striped table lamp shades that provide a strong graphic element. A family heirloom hutch and wall-to-wall bookshelves filled with cookbooks complete the space. The primary bedroom offers a moody retreat with chocolate brown paint, a custom wood canopy bed by Michael Morrow of MDM Design Studio, neutral linens, and jewel-toned teal patterned pillows. Traditional screen art above the headboard and midcentury chairs by the windows contribute to the room's unique aesthetic. The primary bathroom features soothing blue walls, a black-and-neutral tiled floor, and a vibrantly patterned antique rug. The hallway is adorned with family photos, many taken by Melany Robinson herself.
The daughter's bedroom combines whimsy and sophistication with pale green walls and trim, accented with gold and amber. A rattan light fixture, a boucle fabric bed, a multi-colored, checkered blanket, and Anthropologie curtain panels with botanical designs create a playful yet mature space. The backyard, a central and inspiring area, is used for morning coffee and entertaining, featuring a fire pit and grill. Landscaping by Father Nature Landscapes includes terracotta containers, topiary Olive trees, and Rio Grande Orange Purslane, designed to evoke a Southern Spanish kitchen garden, complementing the home's Spanish styling. The article emphasizes how the collaboration between the Robinsons and Fran Keenan resulted in a home that truly reflects the family's personality and style through its thoughtful blend of various design elements.
