Room We Love: An Eclectic Dining Room in Highlands Ranch
This article highlights the transformation of a previously uninspired dining room in Highlands Ranch into an eclectic and culturally rich space, designed by Erika Rundiks, principal of Recherche Interior Design. The homeowner's desire to incorporate elements of her childhood home in Ivory Coast, which blends African and French influences, served as the primary inspiration for the design. The clients sought a room that felt both formal and French, yet also infused with an African aesthetic.
A key element in achieving this distinctive look is a statement-making, sculptural chandelier from Global Views, crafted from patinaed metal. This piece was chosen specifically for its departure from traditional designs, adding a unique and adventurous flair to the room. The selection reflects the clients' willingness to embrace unconventional design choices, moving beyond predictable furnishings to create a more dynamic environment.
French style is evident in several aspects of the dining room. Custom window treatments, made with Donghia’s graphic Edith fabric and layered with sheers, contribute significantly to the desired European elegance. The Bernhardt dining table, sideboard, and chairs, along with a Visual Comfort lamp on the sideboard, also nod to classic French aesthetics. The artwork, sourced from Abend Gallery and arranged in a manner described as European, further enhances the formal and refined atmosphere.
To seamlessly blend the African and French influences, a vibrant Cisco Brothers bench from CAI Designs was incorporated. Upholstered in Brentano fabric, this colorful piece provides additional seating and introduces a "pop of color," specifically purple, which the homeowner desired but did not want as a dominant hue in the overall house. The bench serves as an unexpected and refreshing element, allowing for a playful expression of color within the sophisticated design scheme.
Erika Rundiks, known for her unpredictable aesthetic, found this project to be a perfect match for her design philosophy, which often involves incorporating cultural or international concepts. The successful integration of diverse cultural elements into a cohesive and stylish dining space showcases Rundiks' expertise in creating personalized and meaningful interiors. The renovation transformed a formerly bland area into a room with a distinct identity, reflecting the homeowner's unique background and taste. The design balances formal French elegance with spirited African touches, resulting in a dining room that is both inviting and visually captivating.
