Kitchen makeover for less than $250
This article highlights a budget-friendly kitchen makeover project by Avery Michaels from the blog "Holland Avenue Home," which transformed a dark kitchen into a bright and inviting space for under $250. The core of the renovation involved painting the existing dark wood cabinets, a task made simpler by using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. This particular paint type eliminated the need for sanding or priming, allowing the cabinet doors to remain on their hinges, thereby speeding up the painting process. Michaels opted for Duck Egg Blue for the lower cabinets and Pure White for the upper cabinets, with each of the two quarts costing $34.95. A clear sealer wax, priced at $25, was applied to protect the paint, bringing the total cost for paint and supplies to $155.
In addition to the cabinet refresh, Michaels utilized half a gallon of white paint that was already available in her home to brighten various elements of the kitchen, including the window frame, backsplash, soffit, trim, and walls. This simple step significantly enhanced the room's overall brightness. Another cost-saving measure involved the cabinet hardware. Instead of purchasing expensive Kohler handles at $25 each, Michaels found similar-looking alternatives on Amazon for just $1.50 per handle and $1.15 per knob. She bought a pack of 20 knobs and 20 handles, totaling $53, which represented a substantial saving.
The flooring, originally linoleum, was considered for replacement with wood-like vinyl, but the estimated cost of $350 was deemed too high for the budget. As an alternative, an area rug was chosen to cover the floor, providing a cozy touch and the added benefit of being portable for future moves. A completely free, yet effective, step taken to further brighten the kitchen was the removal of screens from the windows. Michaels emphasizes that while the makeover was labor-intensive, painting offers immediate and affordable results for those looking to update their kitchen.
