This Budget Kitchen Remodel Only Cost $7K
The article details a successful kitchen renovation project undertaken by blogger Julia Dzafic of Lemon Stripes, transforming a dark and dated kitchen in Stamford, Connecticut, into a chic and luminous space with a budget of $7,000 and a timeline of four weeks. Dzafic's primary design philosophy, "when in doubt, paint it white," guided the transformation, focusing on cosmetic updates rather than structural changes, given that the kitchen already had good flooring, new appliances, and a functional layout. The main objectives were to paint the beige cabinets white, remove dental molding, replace the backsplash, install a larger sink, update the dark granite counters, and add an island for extra counter space.
The renovation began with painting the cabinets. Julia, with the help of a handyman, removed and sanded the cabinet doors before applying two coats of a super-bright white satin finish paint, costing a total of $68 for two gallons. This significantly brightened the room, compensating for the lack of natural light. Following the painting, new chrome knobs were installed on the cabinets, costing $72 for 24 pieces purchased from Lowe's, adding a fresh and modern touch.
The backsplash was replaced with classic white subway tiles, a cost-effective choice at $90. Julia opted for smaller tiles, purchased in sheets to save money, to avoid overwhelming the kitchen's compact size. To address the need for more storage and utilize dead space, a removable butcher block island was introduced. Originally considering a custom-built island, budget constraints led to the purchase of a Crate and Barrel island for $499, which offered both functionality and style.
For the sink, Julia initially desired a porcelain apron-front model but opted for a more budget-friendly and durable stainless steel model, costing $194. She chose the largest possible size for the space (33 inches) and complemented it with a new chrome faucet to match the cabinet hardware. The most significant expense of the renovation was the countertop, totaling $4,000. Despite her preference for natural granite, Julia couldn't find a sufficiently white option within her budget, leading her to select a milky Silestone quartz. While initially hesitant, she found the quartz to be lovely in person and highly durable.
The existing dental molding on the cabinetry was a point of dissatisfaction for Julia. It was removed and replaced with a simple, slimmed-down crown molding, costing $60. She noted that this trimwork made almost as significant a difference as the paint in enhancing the kitchen's appearance. Labor costs for the handyman, who was crucial for tasks such as backsplash demolition, molding replacement, and cabinet painting, amounted to $1,000.
Finally, finishing touches costing $883 allowed for personal accents. By economizing on the core renovation elements and maintaining a clean, white palette, Julia was able to splurge on colorful items like riviera-chic bar stools. A breakfast nook was created with artwork, a cozy rug, and a budget-friendly tulip table from IKEA, completing the bright and updated kitchen space.
