In 1650, Ruscombe Northbury was acquired by local landowner William Barker from the trustees selling Church lands but reverted to the cathedral post-Restoration. During the 17th century, the manor was leased to William Strowde, later passing to the Knight family through marriage. The property continued to change hands among various land-owning families, including the Leveson-Gowers. General John Leveson-Gower, lord of the manors of Ruscombe Northbury and Southbury by 1829, held his family seat at Bill Hill.
