Antonio Citterio’s delicate and welcoming sofa for Flexform
Antonio Citterio, a renowned Italian designer, has once again collaborated with the luxury Italian brand Flexform to create the 'Harper' seating system. Unveiled at Salone del Mobile 2021, the Harper sofa embodies elegance through its meticulously balanced proportions, refined upholstery, and exceptional handcrafted details. Citterio, who has a 40-year history of designing numerous sofa models for Flexform, emphasizes that each sofa serves as a stage for a variety of uses, a philosophy deeply embedded in the Harper's design. The sofa's name, 'Harper,' is inspired by the harp, aiming to evoke a sense of delicacy and welcome, likening its comfort to the sophisticated sound of a stringed instrument.
A standout feature of the Harper sofa is its distinctive console armrest. This armrest, crafted from a thin metal sheet encased in leather, is available in two widths and thirteen different colors, including Dark Brown, Olive, and Bulgarian Red. This functional element is designed to store various items such as throws, books, remote controls, or magazines, adding a practical dimension to its aesthetic appeal. The Harper system is highly modular, comprising generously padded seats, corners, armchairs, ottomans, and terminal elements. These components are available in three depths (99cm, 111cm, and 126cm), allowing for extensive configuration possibilities to perfectly suit any living space.
The entire production of the Harper sofa is carried out by Flexform’s skilled craftspeople at their factory in Meda, Italy. This commitment to in-house manufacturing ensures refined construction details and a consistently high level of quality. The sofa's relaxed, casual silhouette is specifically designed for open-plan living environments, where its back is as visible and aesthetically important as its front. The internal structure features a wooden frame cushioned with polyurethane foam padding. The premium seat cushions are filled with goose down and incorporates crush-proof material inserts, promising lasting comfort and support.
For upholstery, customers can choose from hundreds of exclusive fabrics, including luxurious materials like cashmere, cotton, linen, and velvet, as well as various leathers. A particularly appealing detail is the gros-grain piping, offered in a range of colors, which allows for further personalization. Clients also have the option to provide their own fabric to create a truly unique piece. Citterio reflects on his enduring relationship with Flexform, describing it as a collaboration with a group of friends who share common visions and experiences, highlighting the deep personal and professional connection that has spanned over four decades and continues to drive their innovative designs.
