The Nyala combines traditional African furniture with modern lines
Jomo Tariku, a Springfield-based industrial designer, is revolutionizing furniture design by blending traditional African aesthetics with modern lines through his company, Jomo Furniture, established in 2000. His most popular creation, the Nyala chair, is a hand-carved, three-legged piece inspired by the spiral-horned mountain nyalas of Ethiopia. Tariku emphasizes the complexity and satisfaction of designing a chair that is both ergonomically sound and aesthetically pleasing, accommodating diverse body types while serving as a statement piece. He views chairs as art and attracts customers who appreciate this fusion.
Tariku's journey began during his industrial design studies at the University of Kansas, where his thesis focused on modernizing African furniture. He aims to bring these prototypes and finished pieces to a broader audience. A pivotal moment for his career occurred in 2016 at Dubai Design Week, where his prototypes received significant emotional resonance from attendees. Many expressed a desire for furniture that reflects their cultural heritage, a gap Tariku is dedicated to filling. He notes that the industry often overlooks Black designers as creators, frequently relegating African decor to stereotypical tribal masks and leopard prints. Tariku is actively working to change this perception and challenge the industry's traditional mindset.
In 2018, Tariku co-founded the Black Artists + Designers Guild to elevate Black designers within the industry. He observes a growing demand for African-inspired designs in museums and furniture stores, as consumers seek pieces that resonate with their psychological and emotional connections to their heritage. Tariku's vision is to establish a new category within the home and decor industry that celebrates authentic African design, acknowledging the rich diversity across Africa's 54 countries. He aims to shift the narrative around African design, moving beyond narrow interpretations to embrace its vast and varied artistic traditions.
Currently, Tariku operates from his garage studio in Springfield, where he focuses on developing new prototypes. His designs are then handcrafted by a renowned furniture-maker in Columbia, Virginia. Although he previously had an Alexandria storefront from 2000 to 2008 and hopes to reopen a brick-and-mortar location in the future, customers can conveniently purchase his creations through his online store, which launched in April. Tariku believes that furniture, especially chairs, should be an experiential object, and his online platform makes his unique pieces accessible to a wider audience.
