Reinventing the four poster bed: interview with Michael Raymond on the Glint Bed
Michael Raymond, a UK-based product designer and winner of the Charles McCaskie Royal Academy of Engineering Prize, has reimagined the traditional four-poster bed with his Glint Bed. This contemporary design is part of a collection named 'Glint,' a reference to the polished geometric chamfer edge that runs around the design, specifically crafted to reflect light. The article features an interview with Raymond, delving into his design philosophy, inspirations, and the unique aspects of the Glint collection.
Raymond's journey in design began after studying Industrial Product Design at Coventry University, graduating in 2007. His inspiration is drawn from both organic and geometric forms found in nature, aiming to incorporate these ideals into each of his creations. A core principle for Raymond is to design products that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional and purposeful. His vision centers on creating flawlessly beautiful and comfortable products that enhance everyday living through the use of premium materials, advanced design technologies, and skilled handcraftsmanship.
The target audience for Raymond's products comprises customers who seek unexpected and unique designs. These individuals are typically active online researchers, valuing exclusivity and personality in their purchases. To ensure a truly distinctive product experience, each piece designed by Raymond is personally signed and numbered. Currently, the mirror-polished steel version of his Glint Table, the inaugural piece from his collection, is available for pre-order online. The Glint Bed, Glint Table, and Glint Pendants are scheduled for exhibition at ICFF in NYC in May 2020 and at DesignJunction in London in September 2020. The Glint Bed and Glint Table will be made to order, with customers able to inquire and place pre-orders through his website before the exhibitions. The Glint Table is priced at £3750 for the mirror-polished steel variant, while pricing for the Glint Bed and Glint Pendants is yet to be announced.
Raymond is collaborating with Inomo Design in Greece for the fabrication of the Glint Pendants, which are expected to be exhibited and available for purchase by late 2019. His long-term ambition is to establish a physical studio to prototype new pieces, showcase his existing collection, and interact with clients directly. The genesis of the Glint Bed stemmed from Raymond's desire to innovate the conventional four-poster bed, which he perceived as bulky and outdated. He envisioned an elegant, monochromatic, low-slung version upholstered in leather, giving the impression of floating. Recognizing the fundamental role of sleep in well-being, he aimed to elevate the bed from a mere piece of furniture to a primary element that envelops the user in comfort through textures, details, and the soothing aroma of leather.
The choice of a monochromatic palette for the Glint Bed reflects Raymond's preference for simplicity, a timeless combination that exudes elegance and luxury. The bed's form emphasizes symmetry and minimalism; its legs and posts are designed to be as slender as structurally possible, mirroring each other. The low-slung design offers a modern contrast to traditional high-reaching four-poster beds, allowing the details and materials to be appreciated at eye level. The defining 'Glint' detail, a polished geometrically chamfered edge, encircles the design, catching light. This feature is also present on the Glint Table and Glint Pendants, while the rest of the bed frame is painted in a super matte finish to enhance contrast.
Regarding materials and production techniques, the Glint Bed's frame is crafted from timber with a steel-reinforced sub-frame, hand-constructed in London. The upholstered sections are also handmade in London, ensuring meticulous quality control. Raymond is actively exploring vegan leather alternatives to minimize environmental impact, demonstrating his commitment to sustainability. He strongly supports British manufacturing and utilizes recycled materials; for instance, the Glint Table incorporates 95% recycled steel, and its brass version is made entirely from recycled brass.
