Weekends at This Long Island Home Include Pool House Naps and Meals From Vintage Cookbooks
Designer Thomas O’Brien and his husband and business partner, Dan Fink, embark on a weekly ritual, traveling from Manhattan to their weekend home in Bellport, New York. This tradition, which they playfully call "moving day," involves transporting items from O’Brien’s store, Aero, vintage finds, and pieces collected from their international travels, along with their pets. Their destination is a restored and renovated 1833 schoolhouse, affectionately known as the Academy, which serves as a living embodiment of their philosophy of enduring design and love for historical living.
The couple's kitchen, a central hub of their home, is elegantly outfitted with Calacatta marble for the backsplash, counters, and a custom island, with pieces available through Aero and Copper Beech. It is fully stocked with well-loved cookware and illuminated by vintage milk-glass lights and a Eugene pendant lamp designed by O’Brien for Circa Lighting. This space reflects their passion for homemaking and entertaining, which also inspired Copper Beech, their general store located near the Academy. The store, named after the 300-year-old tree under which they married in 2015, is a testament to thoughtful design.
The mudroom further exemplifies their practical and timeless aesthetic, featuring a French white metal rack that beautifully displays a collection of new and antique copper pots. The door and a Windsor chair, painted in Safety Black, provide a striking contrast, while a woven cat basket highlights their commitment to creating cozy spaces for all inhabitants. Their home is filled with carefully selected pieces, including items from O’Brien’s collaborations with brands like Circa Lighting, Target, and Century Furniture, all chosen for their quality construction and durable materials.
During the summer, their routine extends to a small, open-frame pool house, which O’Brien describes as “teeny-tiny.” This structure, once the writing studio of suffragist and poet Anne Lloyd, who called it the Temple, dates back to the 1920s-1940s. The pool house, with its pale gray-green walls and handmade terracotta tile floors, exudes an atmosphere of calm and contemplation. It is a popular spot for naps, even with ample guest rooms available in the main house, offering a tranquil retreat for visitors.
Weekends for Fink and O’Brien also involve culinary adventures, as they frequently consult their extensive library of over 300 vintage cookbooks, often choosing recipes from celebrated chefs like Alice Waters or Julia Child. They source fresh fish and vegetables from a local farm stand, embracing the therapeutic aspect of cooking. Even for simple meals or a glass of wine outdoors, the couple pays meticulous attention to detail, consistently setting the table with candles, tablecloths, napkins, and flowers, viewing these preparations not as chores but as a source of joy. This dedication to enriching their daily lives through design, history, and culinary pursuits underscores the essence of their Bellport home.
