Best of Design 2025: This Serene Renovated Bathroom is Like an In-Home Retreat
The article highlights the Best Renovated Bathroom for 2025, a project by designer Seashal Belldina of Interiors by Seashal in Peters, Pittsburgh. The renovation transformed a cramped guest bathroom into a serene, in-home retreat, utilizing a combination of alabaster tile, Calacatta marble, and dolomite stone to create a tranquil aesthetic. The project was recognized in the annual Best of Design contest for its cohesive design and masterful integration of materials.
Before the renovation, the bathroom was characterized by an awkward layout, an oversized closet connected to a media room, a pop-in shower stall, black countertops, and builder-grade fixtures. Belldina's approach involved a complete demolition, taking the space "down to the studs" to maximize functionality and create a more open feel. The primary goal was to make the room appear more spacious without altering its structural footprint, achieved through clever design choices.
A key feature of the redesigned space is a custom, locally handcrafted walnut vanity. Stained in a warm brown, the vanity complements the new hardwood floors installed in the adjacent guest bedroom, enhancing the overall flow and warmth of the suite. The shower area is particularly noteworthy, featuring LED strip lighting that illuminates the walls, creating a soft, ambient glow. Large alabaster sheets line the shower walls, contributing to an elegant and seamless look, while the ceiling and floor are covered with small mosaic Calacatta tiles. A shower bench, along with the frame and countertops, are all wrapped in natural stone, further emphasizing the luxurious and natural spa-like atmosphere. Behind the bathtub and vanity, a textured alabaster tile adds an additional layer of visual interest and sophistication.
Judges praised the renovation for its successful application of creamy and natural tones, noting its timely re-emergence in design trends. Stephanie Schill Hayden, a registered architect and designer, commented on the flawless execution of mixing diverse materials cohesively without creating a cluttered or busy appearance. Crystal Knapik, a project designer, appreciated the timeless and classy outcome, highlighting how the hardware selection perfectly complemented the warm tones of the wood and tile.
The overall design incorporates walnut accents, Art-Deco-inspired cabinet handles, and a soothing color palette of grays, beiges, and creams, contributing to a modern organic spa ambiance. Belldina's ingenuity is evident in the transformation of the pass-through closet into a spacious shower, complete with a 16-inch rainhead and a separate shower head. To maintain privacy while allowing natural light, Rex Glass applied a special filter to the bathroom window, which overlooks grass.
The homeowners expressed immense satisfaction with the outcome, emphasizing that Belldina's attention to detail and material selection successfully created the beautiful and serene retreat they desired for their guests. This project exemplifies how thoughtful design can convert a constrained and outdated space into a luxurious and tranquil haven.
