Wemo Stage Smart Scene Controller (review)

The Wemo Stage Smart Scene Controller, a wireless smart switch, initially launched in spring 2021 as 'Thread Ready' but operated on Bluetooth. A key announcement at CES 2022 confirmed the long-awaited Thread update, enabling the device to function as originally intended. Prior to this update, the switch was exclusively HomeKit compatible, leveraging Bluetooth connectivity. With the integration of Thread, a core component in the forthcoming Matter smart home standard, the Wemo Stage is anticipated to expand its compatibility to other platforms upon Matter's release. The product retails for approximately US$50 and includes a CR2032 coin battery. Its packaging is designed to securely hold the switch, which can be added to HomeKit using an NFC chip, bypassing the need to scan a QR code. The Wemo Stage is composed of three main parts: a removable switch, a backplate, and an inner plate that uses a magnet to secure the switch. The magnetic plate also allows for attachment to metal surfaces, though the grip may not be optimal. The dimensions and screw holes of the plate are compatible with standard Decora-type plates, facilitating integration alongside existing wired switches. Its slim profile, despite being a wireless device, is comparable to traditional switches, offering the added advantage of portability. The switch itself features three distinct buttons, each with a tactile raised dot pattern—single, double, or triple—which may assist users in low-light conditions or those with visual impairments. Initially, the Wemo Stage's performance was hindered by slow response times and missed presses due to its reliance on Bluetooth. An update late in 2021 improved Bluetooth performance, but a significant enhancement came with the Thread firmware. The Thread update not only boosted responsiveness but also expanded the switch's functionality to include single, double, and long-press actions, aligning it with other smart switches on the market. The transition from Bluetooth to Thread dramatically improved the device's speed and reliability, mitigating issues like delayed reactions after periods of inactivity common with Bluetooth devices. Comparing Thread to Bluetooth in this context highlights the superior performance of Thread for smart home applications where quick reactions are crucial for devices like switches and bulbs. While the difference between 0.5 and 0.75 seconds might seem minor, the elimination of Bluetooth's inherent latency and sleep-wake cycles provides a more consistent user experience. Although Thread is a relatively new protocol, its performance in the Wemo Stage is noted to be comparable to Zigbee, which is a more established protocol in the smart home ecosystem. Despite its improved functionality with Thread, the US$50 price point is considered relatively high, especially when compared to alternative Zigbee-based switches like those from Aqara. The review concludes by recommending the Wemo Stage for users who specifically desire a Thread-enabled switch, particularly if they already own Thread border routers like the HomePod Mini or the 2021 Apple TV, and are looking for a fast, hub-free wireless button. It is suggested that Wemo may need to differentiate its product through unique design features or by lowering its price as more Thread-enabled buttons enter the market. #WemoStage #SmartSceneController #Thread #HomeKit #Matter #SmartSwitch #WirelessSwitch #HomeAutomation #SmartHomeDevice #WemoStage #SmartSceneController #Thread #HomeKit #Matter #SmartSwitch #WirelessSwitch #HomeAutomation #SmartHomeDevice
