Nanoleaf 4D Review: Immersive TV Bias Lighting For Less
The Nanoleaf 4D backlight kit for TVs aims to enhance the television viewing experience by extending the on-screen colors onto the wall behind the display. This technology, known as bias lighting or backlighting, is designed to boost contrast and create a more immersive environment. The article positions the Nanoleaf 4D as a strong contender in this product category, particularly highlighting its color accuracy, convenience, and competitive pricing.
The Nanoleaf 4D system utilizes a camera, mounted either above or below the TV screen, to sample colors in real-time. These colors are then replicated by a long strip of adhesive LEDs placed around the perimeter of the television's backside. The product is available in two sizes: one for TVs up to 65 inches and another for TVs up to 85 inches. The author tested the larger model on an 80-inch television.
Installation involves attaching the continuous LED strip to the TV. Unlike some competitors that use segmented strips, Nanoleaf provides four corner brackets to facilitate the 90-degree turns, aiming to prevent detachment or breakage. A minor issue encountered during testing was that the LED strip, despite its claimed support for larger displays, was slightly too short for the author's 80-inch TV, leaving a small unlit area. Excess strip length can be trimmed with scissors.
The camera, essential for color-matching, connects along with the LED lights to a breakout box. This box, which also houses a power button and three function buttons for different operational modes, is powered by a wall outlet. For setup, a HomeKit QR code is located on the back of the breakout box, necessitating careful handling during the initial configuration phase. The setup process, which can be time-consuming, includes getting the LEDs straight and navigating around TV electronics, especially for wall-mounted televisions. The author noted some initial difficulties with the pre-release app and HomeKit code scanning, which were resolved after troubleshooting and a firmware update.
Calibration is a crucial step following installation. Users must define the TV's corners in relation to the LEDs and then configure the camera by identifying the screen's edges within a distorted, fish-eye view provided by the app. This process is made easier if the TV is turned on.
The Nanoleaf 4D offers various operational modes, including displaying basic colors, activating multicolor scenes, and a rhythm mode that synchronizes lights with ambient sound. The primary feature, "mirror mode," is where the LED hues match the on-screen colors in real-time. This mode features four intensity options: 1D, 2D, 3D, and 4D, each progressively increasing the vibrancy and motion of the backlighting effect. These modes are customizable, allowing users to adjust color range, saturation, and white balance. A rhythm mode can be layered over these options, though it can lead to a very dynamic visual experience.
Comparing the Nanoleaf 4D to the Govee Envisual, the review indicates that the Nanoleaf 4D provides a generally superior experience. The Nanoleaf's colors are described as brighter, more vivid, and more accurate, addressing issues found in competitor products where LED colors might not perfectly align with screen content. While the Nanoleaf 4D's colors sometimes leaned slightly green, they were generally precise and rich, particularly in 4D mode, allowing for adjustment to prevent distraction. The Nanoleaf mobile app interface is also considered simpler and more user-friendly than the Govee app. Financially, the Nanoleaf 4D is presented as a more affordable option compared to the Govee Envisual T2.
