Nanoleaf x Fantaqi EXPO Display Case Review: Stackable RGB Splendor
Nanoleaf, in collaboration with Fantaqi, introduces the EXPO Display Case, an innovative illuminated storage solution designed to showcase collectibles. Moving beyond traditional smart lights, these stackable cases offer a purpose-built alternative to standard shelving for displaying items like figurines, custom controllers, or limited-edition sneakers. Unlike generic LED strips applied to existing furniture, the EXPO cases provide high brightness and color accuracy with even light distribution, ensuring collectibles are presented in their best light. The Smarter Kit, which includes four stackable display boxes, features well-hidden LED light strips that offer Nanoleaf's characteristic color accuracy and integration with popular smart home platforms such as Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, Razer Chroma, Corsair iCUE, and MIJIA. Music visualization is also supported, adding a dynamic element to the display. Users can control the cases via a physical control panel, Nanoleaf apps, or compatible smart home software. Up to 300 display cases can be added to a room using expansion packs, allowing for extensive and coordinated displays.
The assembly process for the EXPO Display Cases is tool-free, requiring no screws or brackets. While the initial setup of the first box might take some time to master, subsequent expansion cases become easier to assemble. The most challenging aspect involves connecting the two side panels to the bottom panel, which requires considerable force to achieve a secure click. The top and back panels snap into place with less effort. Cases connect using plastic linkers, which are described as being less rigid than those used for Nanoleaf Blocks. Users are advised to ensure each case has at least one linker connecting it to an adjacent or stacked case. The Nanoleaf mobile app can detect connected cases and allows for adjustment of display orientation. The cases support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks and can function as a Thread Border router for compatible smart home gadgets, enhancing wireless connectivity.
Each display box measures 14.9 inches wide, 11 inches deep, and 8.7 inches tall, with approximately 7.5 inches of usable vertical space. This dimension primarily suits items that are wider than they are tall, such as limited-edition sneakers or standard-sized collectible figures like Funko Pops, which typically stand around 6.25 inches. The cases are not ideal for taller collectibles due to this height limitation. The design features a clear window at the rear and a plastic door that swings open at the front. The main body of the case is made from white hard plastic, while the door is noted to be somewhat more fragile. A physical control panel on the master controller case allows users to turn the display on/off, adjust brightness, and cycle through preset lighting changes. Magnetic sensors within the cases provide lighting effects that indicate when a door is open or closed.
In terms of software and performance, the EXPO Display Cases leverage existing Nanoleaf app features, including preset effects, scenes, and music-reactive patterns. The app also allows for downloading user-created effects and creating custom lighting patterns. A newer feature, AI Magic Scenes, can generate personalized lighting effects based on user search phrases. While the app periodically loses connection, this issue typically resolves itself quickly. The LED light strips are subtly integrated into the interior ceiling, providing bright and evenly diffused illumination. The RGBW chips ensure excellent color accuracy and smooth transitions between colors and shades of white. Compatibility with Razer Chroma allows for syncing lighting effects with Razer RGB peripherals during gameplay, and screen mirroring capabilities can program lighting based on monitor content. The Orchestrator feature, currently in early access, enables real-time audio analysis for music-responsive lighting without latency. The product's $300 price for four cases may seem significant, but for serious collectors, it is presented as a reasonable investment to properly display valuable items. The main drawbacks noted are the fragility of the doors and linkers, and the limited height for certain collectibles.
