How to clean walls – the best ways to get rid of marks and scuffs

Maintaining clean walls is essential for a well-kept home, as scuffs, marks, and stains are inevitable over time. This guide outlines various methods for cleaning walls, addressing different types of blemishes, and offering expert advice to restore surfaces without necessitating a new coat of paint. The effectiveness of cleaning depends significantly on the type of paint used on the walls. Semi-gloss and glossy enamel paints are generally more resilient and respond well to cleaning, while flat, satin, and eggshell latex paints may be more delicate and prone to fading or rubbing off if cleaned too abrasively. Homeowners unsure about their paint type should conduct a small test in an inconspicuous area using a damp cellulose sponge. If smudging or color fading occurs, it's advisable to stop and consider professional cleaning or repainting. For everyday dirty marks and fingerprints, a gentle approach is recommended. Before tackling these marks, it's crucial to dust the walls lightly to prevent smearing existing grime. A microfiber cloth, potentially attached to a mop or broom for extended reach, is effective for dusting. Once dusted, a solution of warm, mildly soapy water and a soft cloth can be used. It's important not to over-wet the walls to avoid watermarks. After applying the soap solution, allow it to sit for approximately five minutes before rinsing with clean water. Grease stains, commonly found in kitchens, can also be removed with warm water and a small amount of dish soap, followed by a rinse with clean water. An alternative, and popular, household item for grease removal is white vinegar. A solution of one cup of white vinegar mixed with warm water, applied with a soft sponge, can effectively lift grease. Again, moderate moisture application and a thorough rinse with clean water are key. When walls become an accidental canvas for children's scribbles, melamine sponges, such as Mr. Clean Magic Erasers, are highly effective. These sponges work well on crayon and pencil marks. Users should wet the melamine sponge and gently scrub the affected area until the marks disappear. However, caution is advised when using melamine sponges on water-based paints like latex or acrylic, as they can potentially remove some of the paint. Gentle scrubbing is essential to minimize this risk. Cleaning walls before repainting is a critical step to ensure proper paint adhesion and a smooth finish. The cleaning process for preparing walls for paint is similar to general wall cleaning. Begin by removing cobwebs and loose debris with a brush or dry cloth. Subsequently, apply a cleaning solution, which can be made from dish soap, salt, and warm water. The cloth or sponge used for application should be damp, not soaking wet, to prevent water stains. After allowing the solution to sit for about 10 minutes, rinse the walls with clean water. The easiest way to clean dirty walls is often with a simple mixture of water and dish soap. For more stubborn stains, a paste made from three parts water and one part baking soda can be applied to the affected area. This paste should not be used on wallpaper; professional cleaning is recommended for wallpapered surfaces. To avoid damaging paint during cleaning, it is important to refrain from aggressive scrubbing, especially on flat, satin, or eggshell finishes. Gloss and semi-gloss paints are more durable and can withstand slightly more vigorous cleaning. For areas prone to frequent marking, opting for scrubbable paints with stain-blocking properties can reduce the need for extensive cleaning efforts. #WallCleaning #HomeMaintenance #CleaningTips #StainRemoval #PaintCare #DIYCleaning #InteriorDesign #HouseholdHacks #WallCleaning #HomeMaintenance #CleaningTips #StainRemoval #PaintCare #DIYCleaning #InteriorDesign #HouseholdHacks
