Inside a 19th-Century Virginia Home Filled With Botanical Inspiration
Designer Joe Ireland embarked on a transformative project for an 1840s Federal-style home in Alexandria, Virginia, moving away from his firm's usual understated aesthetic to introduce vibrant color and botanical motifs. The homeowners, a couple with a teenager, acquired the three-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bathroom residence in the early 2000s, which had previously undergone renovation. The initial interiors, characterized by navy and merlot walls and a star-spangled rug, did not align with the family's lively disposition, prompting the need for a brighter, more personalized design.
The design process began with the wife's vision for the entryway: a Designers Guild wallcovering featuring painterly white peonies and foliage. To emphasize its unique quality, Ireland applied the wallcovering only up the stairs to the second-floor landing. A faux finisher meticulously blended the pattern, creating a seamless transition as it trailed off, allowing the background color to continue upwards, all framed by Ireland’s signature pin-striped trim. Existing furniture and art were thoughtfully repurposed, reupholstered, or curated, with new additions predominantly comprising antiques, such as a Vienna Secession chandelier sourced from 1stDibs. This approach underscores the firm's philosophy of incorporating clients' personal belongings to foster a sense of inherited history within the home.
The botanical theme further blossomed throughout the residence. The dining room features a mural wallcovering by Andrew Martin and Kit Kemp, depicting a whimsical scene of creatures dancing among tall trees bearing giant pears. The intricate pattern was even hand-painted over a built-in speaker, ensuring visual continuity. The primary bedroom embraces this theme with botanical wallcovering and coordinating drapery by Jessica Zoob. In the living room, Ireland selected a bright coral fabric for a Bernhardt sofa, creating a striking contrast against lavender walls painted with Benjamin Moore's French Lilac, contributing to a cheerful atmosphere.
The entryway's Designers Guild Zinc Floreale wallcovering is complemented by an S. Harris bench fabric and a vintage chandelier. The living room's coral sofa is paired with patterned chairs in Ferrick Mason fabric. The custom carpet by Georgetown Carpet and an Artisan Lighting chandelier enhance the space, alongside a vintage bench upholstered in Thibaut fabric. In the dining room, a handmade tissue wallcovering by Twin Diamond Studios in the niches serves as an elegant backdrop for decorative plates, while the mural wallcovering defines the room. A Stark rug, Villa Nova curtain fabric, vintage Royal Doulton mantel vases, and an 18th-century wall art piece contribute to the room's sophistication. The primary bedroom, in addition to its Jessica Zoob wallcovering and curtains, features a Circa Lighting table lamp, a Made Goods nightstand, a Bernhardt bed, James Malone Fabrics bedding, Kevin O’Brien Studio pillows, and a Pierre Frey bolster pillow. The bathroom showcases Phillip Jeffries wallpaper and Urban Electric Co. sconces.
