This Simple DIY Limewash Paint Hack Costs Less Than $20 — But the Results Look Way More Expensive

Limewash paint, a centuries-old wall covering made from crushed limestone, is valued for its organic and calming aesthetic, despite its limited color range and high cost. A gallon of traditional limewash paint can cost over $90 and requires additional materials like primer, densifier, and sealer. This article introduces a DIY limewash paint hack that achieves a luxurious, textured look for under $20, gaining significant popularity on TikTok. This budget-friendly method mimics the characteristic suede-like effect of limewash by thinning various paint colors with water and applying them in circular motions using a cloth. The process begins with selecting complementary neutral paint sample pots, with a recommendation for five to six shades to create a complex effect. The walls need thorough preparation, including sanding to remove particles and dirt, followed by priming and applying a base layer. This preparation is crucial as the natural texture of limewash allows scratches and marks to blend in, contributing to its character. Interior designer Kashi Shikunova notes that limewash's subtle texture and soft shades offer a timeless look that changes with light and complements various furniture styles. A significant advantage of this DIY technique over traditional limewash is the ease of painting over it if desired, unlike conventional limewash which forms a chemical bond with the surface, making removal more difficult. After preparation, the next step involves painting a base layer, especially if the walls are dark or patterned. A lighter shade than the intended limewash colors is recommended for the base to ensure the effect builds effectively rather than merely covering existing finishes. The paint for the limewash effect is then mixed with water. The ideal ratio is one part paint to three parts water, added gradually to achieve a thin, watery consistency that varies depending on the paint brand. This mixture is then applied to the wall using an old rag or lint-free cloth, rubbing it in circular motions to blend and create a marbled appearance. It is advised to practice on a small, well-lit area first to confirm the desired color combination and effect before proceeding with the entire wall. For optimal coverage and to achieve the desired nuanced effect, two to three coats are typically required. Care must be taken not to apply too many coats, as this can result in a solid color, losing the distinctive limewash texture. Applying the paint diagonally, rather than in straight lines, helps prevent visible horizontal streaks. Julia Mack, a Brooklyn-based interior designer, emphasizes the importance of careful planning to ensure an effective application that preserves the beautiful texture. This DIY project, estimated to take less than a day and cost around $15 for an accent wall, offers a less committed and more affordable alternative to traditional limewash paints. The appeal of limewash, according to Julia Mack, lies in its romantic old-world charm and its ability to create a cozy atmosphere with subtle texture and color, distinguishing it from other finishes like Venetian plaster by its matte, cloud-like effect. #DIYHomeDecor #LimewashPaint #BudgetDecor #InteriorDesign #WallFinishes #HomeImprovement #PaintHacks #TexturedWalls #DIYHomeDecor #LimewashPaint #BudgetDecor #InteriorDesign #WallFinishes #HomeImprovement #PaintHacks #TexturedWalls
