“Newsworthy” Wall-Covering is Made Entirely of Newspaper
Textile and product designer Lori Weitzner has introduced a new wall-covering called “Newsworthy” which is crafted entirely from 100% up-cycled newspapers. This innovative design repurposes old newspapers into a decorative and functional element for interior spaces. The creation process involves meticulously weaving strips of recycled newspapers by hand, resulting in a unique textural wall covering. Once installed, the wall covering reveals subtle yet discernible headlines, adding an interactive and visually engaging element to a room, allowing occupants to potentially read snippets of past news.
The technique employed for “Newsworthy” is analogous to that used in producing grass cloth wall coverings, but with the distinct characteristic of utilizing newsprint. This substitution introduces an interactive dimension, differentiating it from traditional materials. To guarantee both quality and longevity, the paper strips within “Newsworthy” are interwoven with durable nylon thread. Furthermore, the finished product is treated with a water-based topcoat. This protective layer serves to prevent yellowing of the newsprint over time and guards against staining, ensuring the wall covering maintains its aesthetic appeal and structural integrity.
“Newsworthy” is available in a width of 47 inches and is priced at $125 per yard, catering to the trade market. This product is part of Lori Weitzner’s 2010 wall-covering collection, which emphasizes a commitment to sustainable design principles. The entire collection reflects a focus on green production, utilizing natural fibers such as banana leaves and paper pulp in its various offerings. This approach underscores a broader effort by the designer to integrate environmentally conscious practices into her product development, providing consumers with options that are both aesthetically pleasing and ecologically responsible. The “Newsworthy” wall-covering exemplifies this commitment by transforming discarded materials into a refined interior design element, highlighting the potential for upcycling in contemporary design.
