Limewashing trend: why this European paint trend is perfect for your kitchen

Limewashing, an ancient painting technique, is experiencing a resurgence in popularity, particularly for kitchen interiors. While it might seem counterintuitive to label this age-old method as a 'trend,' designers predict that limewashed kitchens will maintain their appeal for many years to come, demonstrating that sometimes the future of design is rooted in the past. This technique is currently gaining significant traction on social media, with kitchens featuring limewashed walls becoming a focal point. Paint experts and designers highlight several compelling reasons why limewashing is an ideal choice for the kitchen, often considered the busiest space in a home. Fanný Hjartardóttir, an expert from limewash paint specialist Kalklitir, emphasizes that limewash creates a 'unique and matte surface' that imparts an 'artistic and natural atmosphere' to a home. The Schoolhouse Kitchen, designed by deVOL, is cited as a prime example of a much-loved project that showcases the appeal of limewashed interiors. One of the primary benefits of limewashed walls is their remarkable durability. Los Angeles-based designer Melanie Thomas of Melanie Thomas Design explains that the maintenance aspect is highly favorable because limewash penetrates the brick and plaster rather than merely sitting on the surface, preventing it from peeling off like conventional paint. This long-lasting finish makes it a suitable choice not only for farmhouse kitchen aesthetics but also for minimalist and industrial designs, as it effectively introduces warmth to the walls. Beyond its durability, limewash paint is highly valued for its distinctive matte, textured aesthetic. Helen Parker, Creative Director at deVOL and designer of The Schoolhouse Kitchen, notes that limewash imbues a kitchen with a character that cannot be replicated by a simple paint finish. She further elaborates that it offers 'so much more texture and personality,' contributing to a richer and more engaging visual experience within the space. Finally, limewashing presents a hygienic solution for kitchen environments. Unlike conventional paints that often contain film-forming plastic ingredients, natural lime paint allows walls to 'breathe.' Furthermore, its high pH level acts as a natural deterrent against the growth of mold and fungi on painted surfaces. This inherent antimicrobial property offers crucial protection for kitchen areas, ensuring a cleaner and healthier space for food preparation and dining. #LimewashingTrend #KitchenDesign #EuropeanPaintTechnique #RusticAesthetic #PaintDurability #TexturedWalls #HygienicPaint #HomeInteriors #DesignTrends #LimewashingTrend #KitchenDesign #EuropeanPaintTechnique #RusticAesthetic #PaintDurability #TexturedWalls #HygienicPaint #HomeInteriors #DesignTrends
