Inside a San Diego Kitchen with European Style
This article details the transformation of a 1928 San Diego home's kitchen, which recently received Historical Preservation status. The original kitchen was fragmented into three distinct areas, posing significant challenges for one of the homeowners, an avid chef and baker who accumulated numerous countertop appliances. Kristin Kostamo-McNeil, owner and principal of Anne Rae Design, describes the prior layout as inefficient and frustrating, noting the isolated range without adjacent counter space, the lack of an island for prep, and the misplaced refrigerator. The primary goal of the renovation was to create a functional space that would enhance the cooking experience, specifically for a passionate home chef.
A key design objective was to integrate European influences while honoring the home's original Spanish architectural style and historical status. The design team, including architect Kim Grant Design, achieved a dramatic change in the kitchen's footprint. An expansion where the original sink wall was located provided ample space to reposition the refrigeration and cooking areas. The removal of a dividing wall allowed for the inclusion of a substantial working island, large enough to accommodate guests and provide extensive workspace. This open-concept approach also facilitated the addition of a breakfast nook with built-in seating, fostering a communal dining experience for the family, who often cook together.
The European aesthetic is prominently featured in the kitchen's custom cabinetry. Drawing inspiration from the husband's French heritage—specifically the Beaujolais region where his parents owned a cafe—Kristin designed cabinets that conceal the refrigerator and freezer, making them resemble elegant armoires. This design choice resonated with the homeowners' appreciation for bistro culture. Appliance selection was a foundational decision, influencing the overall design. The color scheme for the cabinetry, featuring navy blue lower cabinets and white uppers, was inspired by a New York City kitchen image that held personal significance for the couple, as they had met there. A hand-painted terracotta tile backsplash was chosen to unify the design, imparting warmth and artisanal character to the space.
A standout feature for the culinary enthusiast homeowner is the Wolf cooktop, equipped with four burners and a French top, ideal for bread baking and preparing large stock pots. The renovation also incorporated a dedicated coffee and beverage center, adding to the kitchen's functionality. The completed space is described as a sophisticated and charming environment, equipped with high-quality appliances and thoughtful functional details, providing ample room for both cooking and entertaining. The homeowners expressed their deep satisfaction with the space, finding it both highly functional and cozy. The design team's personal experience of dining in the new kitchen further affirmed its success in creating a welcoming and efficient culinary hub.
