Jazz, Blues and Cuisine
Jimmy's Jazz & Blues Club in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is a new, one-of-a-kind venue housed within the meticulously restored 1905 YMCA building. Scheduled to open on September 30, this establishment aims to blend inspirational jazz and blues performances with fine dining, libations, and a lively atmosphere. The project, undertaken by the Labrie Group and co-owned by brothers Michael and Peter Labrie, involved extensive restoration efforts, transforming the century-old structure into a state-of-the-art facility.
The architectural restoration of the building focused on recreating its 1905 appearance. Andrew Sidford Architects were instrumental in this process, meticulously reconstructing the front facade to match historical conditions. This included installing bay windows with custom decorative molding and copper roofs, marble windowsills, keystones, belt courses, Pennsylvania brick coursing, quoins, and faceted shop front windows with divided lite transoms. The interior showcases a blend of preserved historic details and new construction, featuring original wooden beams and trusses, brick walls, and fireplaces. A significant addition is a dynamic two-story glass and steel structure at the rear, designed to expand the building and fill the space with natural light, while also highlighting the original YMCA stained-glass windows.
The club is designed to offer an intimate, technologically advanced experience. It features leading-edge acoustical design, state-of-the-art production, sound, and lighting technologies, catering to a range of jazz and blues artists, including Grammy-award-winning musicians like Christian McBride and Mavis Staples. Beyond the music, the venue provides Southern-inspired culinary experiences led by Executive Chef Nathan Varney, complemented by an extensive cocktail and wine list. The first floor of the building also accommodates a new contemporary art museum, while the main stage on the third floor offers guests the choice of a luxury lounge or a spacious balcony to enjoy performances.
The performance and function hall at Jimmy's Jazz & Blues Club is a full restoration of the original YMCA gym/theater/civic center. This area boasts exposed, riveted steel trusses and a dramatic, fully handicapped accessible upper-level mezzanine. The thoughtful design ensures that each visit can offer a unique experience, fostering a special connection between artists and the audience. The Labrie brothers' motivation stems from their passion for music and a desire to enrich the Portsmouth community by creating a space for cultural and culinary connection, aiming to sustain and expand the audience base for jazz and blues for future generations.
Peter Labrie emphasizes the club's commitment to excellence, aspiring to set the highest standard for jazz and blues clubs globally. The objective is to provide guests with a world-class experience, delivering top-quality music, food, and service within a magnificent environment, thereby creating positive and memorable live music experiences for every visitor.
