How This Connecticut Riverfront Home Makes the Most of Its Gorgeous Views
A bicoastal couple built a new home along the Lieutenant River in Old Lyme, Connecticut, prioritizing privacy, space, and the unique natural light known as "Lyme light," which historically attracted American Impressionist painters. The project, encompassing a main house, carriage house, and pool house, features 110 windows and doors from the Marvin Ultimate collection. These handcrafted, customizable windows and glass-paned doors are often arranged to form "walls of glass," creating diverse divided-light designs that simultaneously produce intricate light patterns within the rooms, enhance the exterior aesthetic, and frame the surrounding landscape. Builder Nick Sapia of Sapia Builders emphasized the desire to maximize the views of the tributary, marsh, cattails, and osprey nests. The Marvin Ultimate windows offer a wide selection of styles, sizes, and shapes, including specialty options such as triangles, octagons, and arch-top windows, and can be customized to meet specific design challenges. An example is the custom-designed round window on the front facade, featuring intricate curved and straight muntins, which pays homage to a similar window in the original house on the site. Sapia collaborated with architect Scot Samuelson and interior designer Janine Dowling on the project, noting Marvin's capability to realize virtually any design. This extensive range of options allows for visual diversity within the home, incorporating casement, picture, and specialty windows while maintaining a cohesive architectural style. The traditional exterior is enhanced by SDL (simulated divided lite) windows, which provide the classic gridded appearance of multiple individual panes without compromising energy efficiency. The combination of these windows with Ultimate Swinging doors, particularly in the pool house, creates expansive glass walls that maximize natural light and offer unobstructed views. The Ultimate collection stands out for its broad selection of features, options, colors, and finishes. Each wood component is individually sanded, conditioned, stained, and oven-cured to ensure structural integrity and deliver a high-end, long-lasting appearance. Sapia highlights the desire for a sense of permanency, noting that quality craftsmanship contributes to longevity. While the windows usher in the distinctive Lyme light, the outdoor vistas remain the focal point. Sapia explains that the extensive use of glass on the first floor integrates the interior with the dynamic river bend, making the outdoor scenery the primary attraction.
