We Predict This Kitchen Cabinet Trend Will Take Over in 2024
French designer Inga Sempé, known for her work with brands like Hay, Wästberg, Kvadrat, and Alessi, has partnered with Danish brand Reform to launch her first kitchen collection, 'Column.' Sempé drew inspiration from 1950s kitchens, noting their unique proportions and departure from contemporary trends like Shaker-style doors and brass hardware. Her design process involved extensive experimentation with different profiles, leading to the development of monolithic, chunky handles that span the full height of the cabinet doors, effectively dividing the fronts into two sections. This approach signifies a growing trend in kitchen design where hardware becomes an integral and character-defining element of the cabinetry itself.
The 'Column' collection builds upon an evolving design philosophy that emphasizes integrated hardware. Previously, this trend manifested in cutout holes for finger pulls and bulky oak-wood pulls on refrigerator doors, as well as handles seamlessly integrated into the cabinet profiles. Reform's new line elevates this concept, making the handle a central design feature that provides a distinct character to the kitchen through its shape and repetition. The collection offers six cabinet colorways, including a pistachio green, and allows for mixing and matching finishes. The consistent, seamless design of the hardware is intended to unify diverse material choices within the kitchen space. This innovative approach by Sempé and Reform suggests a shift away from traditional hardware aesthetics towards a more integrated and sculptural interpretation of cabinet functionality and design, potentially influencing kitchen trends in the coming year.
