7 ways this cozy New England-style cottage was transformed – just in time for Christmas
This article details the transformation of a five-bedroom New England-style cottage in Kent, United Kingdom, owned by Johanna and Deniz Safer. The couple, working in finance, sought to imbue the property with their personal taste while preparing it for festive celebrations. The exterior features a rustic blend of country cottage and New England aesthetics, characterized by cladding and Kentish peg tiles. Inside, the spacious, primarily open-plan ground floor and five bedrooms, along with its tranquil location, were key attractive features. Despite the existing decor not aligning with their preferences, the house's 'good bones' presented ample opportunity for improvement.
The kitchen underwent a significant but economical transformation. The Savers opted to retain the handmade cabinetry but reconfigured its layout and updated its appearance. This involved a fresh coat of paint, changing handles and worktops, relocating some cabinets, and installing a new Aga. The kitchen, previously a pale blue, was repainted in a soft cream color called Snow by Neptune, creating a brighter and more contemporary atmosphere. This neutral backdrop allows for a pared-back Christmas decor, focusing on rustic wooden stars and miniature Christmas trees.
The master bedroom, initially unsettled for the couple, was completely revamped. Following Feng Shui principles, mirrored wardrobes were removed. The room was stripped back to brick, and existing steel beams were raised to increase head height, resulting in a more cohesive space. Johanna designed the room to resemble a boutique hotel retreat, incorporating luxury bedroom ideas with layered textures, elegant wallpaper, and a palette of pink and olive hues. The Toile Trellis wallpaper is from Farrow & Ball, the bed-end stool from The Dormy House, and wall lights from Jim Lawrence.
Next, the family bathroom was transformed to include a luxurious freestanding bath and a walk-in shower. The design of this sophisticated space was inspired by the amber tones present in the marble tiles. The main living space, initially feeling like a long, unbroken stretch, was reconfigured by building a false chimney breast with a fireplace for a log burner. This feature was flanked by alcove cupboards and shelves for storage and display. The addition of false ceiling beams further enhanced the character of the rooms, making them feel more homely.
The dining room, featuring a large, low window bay overlooking the garden, was also redesigned. Johanna repurposed a larder cupboard into a stylish dresser by adding glazed doors at the top and four doors below the drawers. This dresser is used to organize glassware, tableware, and accessories. Candlesticks on the dresser top contribute to a festive ambiance during mealtimes. The article also highlights the charming pink-painted girls' bedroom, featuring a teepee, rocking horse, and over-bed canopy, painted in Perfect Pinkish by Valspar. Finally, the guest bedroom is showcased with festive trimmings, including an antique bed, a metallic Christmas wreath above it, and a miniature fir tree, aiming to create a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere for holiday visitors.
