See How Lorraine Levinson Interior Design Completely Redid This Master Bath
This article details the transformation of a master bathroom in a Nantucket-style Colonial home located in Rye, New York. The project was spearheaded by Lorraine Levinson of Lorraine Levinson Interior Design, with architectural contributions from Steven Secon of Steven Secon Architects. The renovation aimed to expand and completely overhaul a long, narrow master bathroom during a whole-home renovation, transitioning it into a luxurious yet practical space.
The inspiration for the redesign was to create an environment that combined the relaxing ambiance of a hammam with the elegance of a luxury hotel suite. This vision also needed to accommodate the practical needs of a family with six children, ensuring the space could withstand occasional splashing from the youngest child using the tub. The primary challenge stemmed from the bathroom's inherent shape—generous in length but lacking in width. The original layout featured the toilet, shower, and tub aligned on one side, with a long vanity wall opposite, which hindered the creation of a traditional focal point.
To address the spatial challenge, designer Lorraine Levinson emphasized the room's length. This was achieved by creating a distinctive tile 'stripe' that commenced at the entrance, extended along the floor, and continued vertically up the wall. While all tiles used were of the same material, the stripe itself featured a double chevron pattern. This zig-zag effect subtly guides the eye towards the far end of the bathroom, effectively transforming a design constraint into an aesthetic feature.
For materials, a consistent stone tile was chosen, but utilized in varying sizes and shapes to add visual interest. The selected material was Calacatta marble, favored for its appealing movement, warmth, and creamy tones complemented by warm, gray veining. Levinson meticulously planned the placement of each tile, previewing them to ensure harmonious patterns and colors with adjacent pieces. This careful execution resulted in a balanced and classic aesthetic, imbuing the space with a sense of luxury and excitement through the unique characteristics of the marble.
Levinson's favorite aspect of the project was the Calacatta marble in the chevron pattern, highlighting its beauty and impact. The homeowners expressed their appreciation for the outcome, valuing a classic, understated home design that feels both warm, welcoming, and fresh. This master bath renovation successfully blended a luxurious design vision with functional considerations, creating a sophisticated and enduring space for the family.
