The Bathroom Design Trend That Experts Are Seriously Conflicted On (Is It An Eyesore?)

A recent bathroom decor trend, dubbed "toiletscaping," has emerged, encouraging individuals to heavily decorate their toilet and its surrounding area. This trend, popularized by content creators like Sarah Velush on TikTok, involves elaborate setups that can include furry or velour zip-on toilet seat covers, gummy gems inside the bowl, foot massagers, fancy toilet paper holders with colorful rolls, and side tables laden with fans, room sprays, and even snacks. Velush emphasizes the idea that one can relax anywhere, including the bathroom, and her videos showcase her themed decor, garnering millions of views. However, the extensive accumulation of items in these displays often leads to visual clutter and a sense of claustrophobia for many viewers, who describe the aesthetic as "overstimulating." This trend has sparked a debate among design experts, with opinions divided on its merits and drawbacks. While some experts, like Alabama designer Leslie Davis, advocate for styling the back of a toilet, especially in open-plan bathrooms, using elements such as fresh or faux floral arrangements, others express significant reservations. Davis believes a styled toilet tank can add a permanent decorative touch. Conversely, bathroom specialist Brian Toward, owner of a bathroom retail company, stresses the paramount importance of hygiene in bathroom design. He cautions that bathrooms are naturally humid environments, which can become breeding grounds for bacteria if decorative items are not regularly cleaned or if they trap moisture. Toward's concern highlights a practical health risk associated with excessive decor in an area prone to microbial growth. The core of the conflict lies in balancing personal expression and aesthetic appeal with crucial considerations for cleanliness and functionality. Ultimately, the decision to engage in toiletscaping is a matter of personal preference and style. The article suggests that a middle ground between a barren and an excessively decorated toilet area is achievable. For those who choose to explore toiletscaping, it is strongly recommended to select non-porous decorative items that are easy to clean and disinfect to maintain sanitary conditions. If fabric items, such as fluffy toilet seat covers, are desired, they must be machine washable and laundered frequently, given their exposure to toilet mist with every flush. Opting not to decorate the toilet area allows for allocation of resources to other parts of the home for decoration. #BathroomDesign #ToiletscapingTrend #HomeDecor #InteriorDesignTrends #HygieneInDesign #DIYHomeDecor #ExpertOpinions #BathroomDesign #ToiletscapingTrend #HomeDecor #InteriorDesignTrends #HygieneInDesign #DIYHomeDecor #ExpertOpinions
