This North Lake Tahoe Guest House Finds the Drama in a Neutral Palette
This article showcases a newly built two-bedroom, two-bath guest house in Martis Camp, North Lake Tahoe, designed by Krista Hoffman. The homeowners, who previously worked with Hoffman on their Menlo Park residence, desired a family-friendly mountain retreat, opting to build the guest house first to expedite their enjoyment of the area. The design draws inspiration from warm tones and earthy textures, emphasizing a neutral palette that creates a sense of drama and sophistication throughout the space.
The living room's focal point is a 16-foot stone fireplace, identical to the stone used on the home's exterior, lending a timeless feel to the interior. The fireplace served as a central element around which the rest of the house was constructed. The kitchen features custom-stained oak cabinets, providing warmth, which are contrasted by black soapstone countertops and other black accents that unify the guest house's aesthetic. A blackened steel hood and double pendant lighting over the island ground the space.
An economically designed breakfast nook in the kitchen comfortably seats up to nine people, maximizing space for family and guests. For sleeping arrangements, one of the two guest rooms is a primary suite, while the other is a bunk room designed to accommodate multiple guests. The bunk room utilizes full-over-twin bunk beds and an additional sleeping loft under a 16-foot ceiling, ensuring ample bedding for visitors.
Bathrooms incorporate unique design elements. The bunk bathroom features an antique wood and metal box shelf, a vintage piece that adds texture and character. Hoffman advocates for layering antiques and vintage items even in unexpected areas like bathrooms. The primary bedroom combines custom, retail, and vintage elements, including a headboard upholstered in Ralph Lauren herringbone wool, a vintage mid-century desk chair, and Pendleton bedding, contributing to a cozy and curated atmosphere.
The main bathroom showcases a beautiful color story with Paozanno marble and oak cabinetry. Hoffman incorporated a mix of metals to achieve a warm and organic feel. Basalt wall tiles and black marble floors complete the master shower, adding to the sophisticated neutral palette. Overall, the guest house exemplifies a thoughtful blend of functional design, natural materials, and vintage touches, creating a dramatic yet inviting retreat.
