Here's How Designers REALLY Feel About Peel-and-Stick Wallpaper

In recent years, peel-and-stick wallpaper has gained popularity as an easy, affordable, and reversible alternative to traditional wallpaper, particularly appealing to DIY enthusiasts and renters. However, the design community holds varied opinions on its effectiveness and suitability for different spaces. Jennifer Hunter, a New York-based interior designer, notes the significant improvement in the quality of peel-and-stick wallpaper over time, acknowledging that while excellent versions exist, lower-quality options are also prevalent. Hunter emphasizes the importance of carefully considering the substrate and print quality of the chosen wallpaper. She recognizes the practical value of peel-and-stick options for flexible spaces, such as rental apartments, kitchens, or children's rooms, where the ability to easily change the decor as tastes evolve is a significant advantage. Erin Coren, co-founder and creative director of Curated Nest Interiors, echoes this sentiment, highlighting the benefits of removable wallpaper for individuals who are hesitant about making permanent design commitments. She advises those who are non-committal to opt for removable wallpaper, as it is generally less expensive and can be installed without professional help. Despite the advantages of peel-and-stick wallpaper, both designers agree that traditional, high-quality wallpaper is a more appropriate investment for long-term projects or permanent residences. Hunter recommends traditional wallpaper for homeowners planning to stay in their homes for more than two years. Coren stresses the importance of selecting a traditional wallpaper that complements the home's architectural style and overall design aesthetic to ensure a seamless and integrated look. Additionally, certain environments, like full bathrooms, are not suitable for removable wallpaper due to high moisture levels, which can prevent proper adhesion. In such cases, traditional moisture-resistant wallpaper or paint is recommended. While peel-and-stick wallpaper is often marketed as a DIY product, both designers strongly suggest hiring a professional installer. Hunter points out that professionals possess the intricate knowledge required for precise cuts and pattern matching, which ultimately saves time and reduces stress. Coren concurs, stating that while DIY installation is possible, professional help often leads to a superior outcome. Regarding brand recommendations, Hunter specifically endorses Society Social’s faux grasscloth, Chasing Paper, and Spoonflower for their quality and diverse design offerings. Coren advises focusing on versatility when choosing wallpaper, recommending textured but solid options or subtle, neutral designs that can adapt to changes in furniture or art. Both designers also underscore the critical role of scale in patterned wallpaper. Hunter considers scale the primary design element when advising clients, explaining that dainty patterns suit smaller spaces, while larger patterns create a bold impact in bigger rooms. However, she also notes that she has occasionally reversed these applications for dramatic effects, using small prints in large rooms for depth and texture, and large prints in spacious areas for a striking statement. Ultimately, both peel-and-stick and traditional wallpapers are effective tools for personalizing interiors. The key to successful application lies in choosing the appropriate type and design for the specific space, often with professional assistance. Hunter concludes that wallpaper can transform a space and bring joy to clients, whether through bold patterns or subtle textures. Coren encourages individuals to trust their design instincts, selecting wallpaper that resonates with their personal style and that they can enjoy for many years, much like a favorite piece of clothing. #PeelAndStickWallpaper #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #WallpaperTrends #DIYHomeDecor #DesignerAdvice #HomeImprovement #DecoratingIdeas #PeelAndStickWallpaper #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #WallpaperTrends #DIYHomeDecor #DesignerAdvice #HomeImprovement #DecoratingIdeas
