TP-Link Smart Wi-Fi Light Switch, Dimmer HS220 review: A solid competitor in the in-wall dimmer space
The TP-Link Smart Wi-Fi Light Switch Dimmer (model HS220) is an in-wall smart dimmer switch designed for home use. The device features a sophisticated and stylish design, with a large rocker switch for on/off control and gradual dimming. Two smaller buttons located above the rocker allow for setting maximum brightness and manual adjustment of light levels. A row of LEDs visually indicates the brightness setting, while a color-coded LED within the paddle displays the switch’s Wi-Fi status.
While the switch itself is well-designed, the accompanying wall plate has some notable drawbacks. It is significantly larger than standard wall plates, measuring 5 x 3.25 inches compared to the typical 4.5 x 2.75 inches, making it visually more prominent. Furthermore, the snap-on design of the wall plate makes alignment challenging. Once snapped into place, it is difficult to remove without bending or potentially breaking, complicating any necessary adjustments for a straight and level installation.
The electrical design of the HS220 is a hybrid approach, utilizing both screw terminals for line and load wires and pigtails for neutral and ground connections. This design aims to conserve space within the junction box by reducing the number of wire nuts required for installation.
Operating through the TP-Link Kasa app, the HS220 offers a straightforward setup process involving a temporary Wi-Fi access point connection. The Kasa app allows users to control power, adjust brightness, and set preset light levels. It also includes basic scheduling and timer functions, useful for vacation controls. The switch can be integrated with other Kasa Smart devices and supports popular smart home ecosystems such as Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Microsoft Cortana, and IFTTT, ensuring broad compatibility and smooth operation.
Retailing around $45, the HS220 is competitively priced compared to other smart dimmers on the market. For instance, it is less expensive than the C by GE C-Start (which includes a motion sensor) and the Wemo Wi-Fi Smart Dimmer and Lutron Caséta Smart Lighting Dimmer Switch, both of which support Apple HomeKit (a feature lacking in the HS220). However, a significant limitation of the TP-Link HS220 is its inability to operate on multi-way circuits, as it is designed exclusively for single-pole installations. This restricts its applicability in homes with complex lighting configurations where multiple switches control a single light fixture.
