I Almost Installed a Dimmer Switch, But I Tried Philips Hue Smart Bulbs Instead
As someone who prefers simplicity and initially hesitated to adopt smart home technology, the author decided to explore Philips Hue smart bulbs as an alternative to installing a traditional dimmer switch. The primary motivation was the bulbs' out-of-the-box dimmability and compatibility with most light fixtures. The author purchased a four-pack of soft white light bulbs, installing one in the living room and another in their youngest daughter's bedroom. After using them for a period, the author expressed satisfaction with the ease of setup and the comprehensive features offered by the accompanying app.
The setup process for the Philips Hue light bulbs is straightforward, involving a Bluetooth connection to a smart device. Users download the Philips Hue app, scan a QR code on the lightbulb, and assign it to a specific room. Once connected, the app enables various controls, including toggling power, dimming lights, utilizing preset light intensities, and setting timers or routines for automatic activation and deactivation. The app also allows for simultaneous or independent adjustment of lighting in multiple rooms.
While the initial intent was to use the dimmability feature as a replacement for a dimmer switch, the author found the "Routines" feature to be the most favored. This functionality allows users to schedule lights to turn on or off at predetermined times. For instance, in the daughter's room, a routine was established to gradually dim the lamp 30 minutes before bedtime, turning off completely at 9:30 p.m., creating a conducive environment for sleep. However, it is noted that without the optional Philips Hue Bridge, these routines require manual activation daily, limiting full automation.
Beyond dimming and routines, other notable features include a nightlight setting, which provides a very low level of illumination, and a candle setting, designed to emit a soft, flickering glow. A timer feature is also available, where the lights flash and then turn on or off once the timer concludes. The Bluetooth-enabled setup permits control of each lightbulb from a smart device within a 30-foot range. The smart bulbs also integrate with popular voice assistants such as Siri, Google Assistant, and Amazon Alexa. For enhanced control and full automation capabilities, the Philips Hue Bridge can be added, supporting up to 50 Philips Hue lights and devices, and enabling remote control from any location with an internet connection.
