This Outdated Stair Trend Is Fading Fast—and Designers Say It's Time to Move On

Fully carpeted stairs are identified by interior designers as an outdated trend that homeowners should move away from in 2025. While carpet on stairs serves a functional purpose, such as mitigating noise and preventing slips, designers advocate for more aesthetically pleasing and equally safe alternatives. The primary issue with fully carpeted stairs, according to experts like Andrea Sinkin Jaffe and Sarah Pickard, is their dated appearance, often associated with the 1990s. A popular alternative to full carpeting is the stair runner. Stair runners provide the necessary traction and noise reduction without covering the entire stair structure, allowing for the exposure of attractive wood or painted finishes on the sides of the treads and risers. However, selecting and installing a stair runner requires careful consideration. Sinkin Jaffe advises choosing patterns that appear good both vertically and horizontally, opting for tighter loop or shorter cut pile fabrics to prevent snagging by pets, and selecting durable, cleanable materials due to high wear and tear. Custom sizing may be necessary for some staircases. Beyond runners, other treatments can enhance stair safety and aesthetics. Designers suggest scoring patterns directly into hardwood treads to create natural traction or applying slip-resistant materials and finishes, such as anti-slip sprays, which are effective yet visually discreet. For those seeking a vibrant touch without a runner, painting the stair risers in bold colors can add a striking design element. These options offer a more contemporary look while addressing safety concerns. For homeowners who have inherited fully carpeted stairs and are not ready for a full renovation, several styling tips can help modernize the space. If replacing the carpet is not feasible, upgrading to a higher-quality material like wool, custom-made carpeting, or a beautifully tufted option can elevate the look, transforming it from an afterthought into an intentional design feature. To divert attention from the carpet, homeowners can create visual interest elsewhere. This includes installing a gallery wall along the staircase, applying unique wall treatments such as wallpaper or picture molding, or establishing a focal point on the stair landing with plants or distinctive decor pieces. Even in basements, where finished treads might be absent, updated carpeting remains a viable option. These strategies allow for working with existing structures while incorporating modern design sensibilities. #StairTrends #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #CarpetedStairs #StairRunners #HomeImprovement #DesignTips #OutdatedTrends #ModernHome #StairTrends #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #CarpetedStairs #StairRunners #HomeImprovement #DesignTips #OutdatedTrends #ModernHome
