Look No Further Than This Pool Noodle Headboard DIY If You Want in on the Arch Trend
This blog post details a DIY project for creating an arched headboard using readily available materials like pool noodles and pipe insulation. The project was conceived by Margaret Wright for her guest bedroom, aiming to replicate the sophisticated look of a tufted wall-to-wall feature often seen in luxury hotels. The total cost of the project was approximately $300.
The essential supplies for this DIY include 10 1-inch-thick pipe insulation tubes, 4 pool noodles, a 2-inch-wide insulation foam backer board, a 1 1/2-inch-thick queen memory foam mattress topper, a low-heat hot-glue gun and glue sticks, spray adhesive, tape, a box cutter, 8 yards of fabric, and an optional queen-size box spring. The author specifically opted for emerald green velvet fabric, sourced affordably from Fabric Wholesale Direct.
The process begins with mapping out the desired size and shape of the headboard. Wright's design featured an outermost tube that was 60 inches tall and 90 inches wide, ensuring it extended beyond a queen mattress and nightstands. The arch shape is initially created by taping pool noodles together end-to-end for the outer border, while pipe insulation tubes are used for the inner layers of the channels. Precision in forming the arch is achieved by eyeballing the shape.
Following the arch formation, a foam board backing is cut to roughly the same dimensions as the combined channels, ideally slightly smaller to remain hidden. For a seamless appearance, fabric can also be adhered to this backing. The next step involves covering the tubes with fabric. The chosen textile is trimmed into strips long enough to wrap around each tube. Pipe insulation pieces are pre-cut, simplifying the process of tucking in excess fabric. Pool noodles, however, require being split open with scissors before the fabric is glued to the inside seam.
Finally, the empty space within the channels is filled. The mattress topper and foam board are cut with a box cutter to fit the half-moon opening. Spray adhesive is applied to the foam board, followed by the mattress topper, and then the velvet fabric. The edges of the fabric are hot-glued around the back of the structure. The individual tubes are then adhered to one another, and the completed arched structure is glued to the upholstered center. To achieve a cohesive look, any leftover fabric scraps can be stapled around the box spring, making the entire bed frame appear as a single, integrated piece.
