I tested Samsung's Bespoke AI 4-Door French Door refrigerator for 3 months — here's my honest verdict
The Samsung Bespoke AI 4-Door French Door refrigerator combines aesthetic appeal with smart technology, though it comes at a premium price. After a three-month evaluation, its energy-efficient cooling system, adaptable interior, and overall design received praise. The refrigerator integrates a hybrid cooling system, utilizing a high-efficiency compressor and a Peltier element. This AI-driven system learns user patterns to optimize energy consumption; for instance, it reduces compressor speed during nighttime hours when the fridge is typically inactive. Conversely, if the doors are left open for an extended period, the Peltier system activates to restore internal temperatures quickly.
From an aesthetic perspective, the refrigerator features a sleek design with hidden handles, a choice that has garnered positive feedback from visitors. The interior offers extensive customization, particularly in the refrigerator section, where door shelves are deep enough to accommodate numerous items. A unique narrow drawer, which functions as an 'Express Water Filter' in the U.S. model, serves as a convenient storage space for small produce like lemons and limes in the U.K. version tested.
The freezer compartment is also well-designed, offering ample storage with deep in-door shelves, two drawers, and four shelves. The U.K. model includes an ice maker with a container for batch ice production, while the U.S. version features advanced ice-making capabilities, including cubed and sphere ice, a desirable trade-off despite the slight reduction in capacity.
Daily use is enhanced by features such as a fold-away shelf for accommodating tall items and an alert system that beeps if the doors remain open for more than 30 seconds. While the alarm can be momentarily inconvenient, it serves as a valuable reminder to conserve cool air and extend the freshness of stored goods. Despite its ample 23 cu. ft. capacity, which might be considered excessive for smaller households, the design maximizes in-door storage, allowing for more efficient organization of condiments and other items.
The refrigerator includes intuitive manual temperature controls and a clear internal display, ensuring that essential functions remain accessible even without relying on smart features. It is compatible with the SmartThings app, offering additional functionalities like recipe suggestions based on stored groceries and dietary preferences, as well as remote temperature adjustments and 'Power Cool'/'Power Freeze' modes. Users can also customize alert sounds via the app, providing flexibility in how they interact with the appliance.
A notable drawback identified during testing was the difficulty in cleaning a specific bottom shelf, where spilled milk became trapped between the glass and plastic components. This design flaw made thorough cleaning challenging without risking damage to the shelf, highlighting an area for potential improvement in future iterations. Despite this minor issue, the Samsung Bespoke AI 4-Door French Door refrigerator is considered an excellent appliance that strikes a balance between advanced technology and user-friendly design, offering substantial competition to more expensive family-sized refrigerators.
