10 clever outdoor kitchen storage ideas to keep your space organised
The increasing popularity of alfresco dining necessitates effective outdoor kitchen storage solutions, mirroring the importance of well-organised indoor kitchens. Dee Fontenot, a style advisor at Wayfair, emphasizes that an outdoor kitchen serves as an extension of the indoor home, requiring practicality, functionality, and style. Chris Bonnett, Founder of Gardening Express, advises considering the proximity of the indoor kitchen and the intended use of the outdoor space—whether for family meals, barbecues, or entertaining large groups—to determine storage needs for cutlery, crockery, and accessories.
One practical storage idea involves using open crates, which are versatile, lightweight, and can be customised. These crates are strong enough to hold glassware, tableware, utensils, and napkins. For smaller outdoor areas, maximising wall space is crucial. Solutions include wall-mounted racks for hanging items, shelving, or rails, such as Ikea's Grillskär back panel, which accommodates utensils and tea towels.
Potting benches offer dual functionality, providing both a workspace and storage with drawers and shelves, often featuring a zinc top suitable for both gardening tasks and food preparation. Labelling drawers with mini chalkboards can enhance organisation. Another innovative idea is to install a copper pipe style hanging rail to keep saucepans, herbs, and BBQ tools off countertops, freeing up space for food preparation. Ricky Davies, marketing director at Sub-Zero & Wolf UK & Europe, highlights the importance of separate outdoor refrigeration for ingredients and beverages, and warming drawers for pre-cooked food, to achieve a seamless outdoor cooking experience.
Purpose-built units specifically designed for outdoor kitchens, such as BBQ counters, offer tailored solutions. These can be painted and arranged in configurations like L-shapes for portable setups, reflecting the growing demand for diverse storage options in outdoor kitchens. In compact spaces, vertical storage is highly effective; installing multiple shelves and utilising baskets, boxes, and crates can maximise storage capacity.
For a cohesive aesthetic, integrated storage can be custom-crafted with evenly spaced shelves. Grouping items practically and visually prevents clutter. Tray tables serve as versatile furniture pieces, providing additional countertop space for food prep or condiments and can be folded away when not in use. Hanging wooden boxes on walls can store herbs, spices, cutlery, and sauces, keeping countertops clear. Finally, investing in dual-purpose storage units, like Garden Trading's Hornton wire units, allows for year-round use both indoors and outdoors, and their transparent design can create an illusion of space.
Regarding weather protection, Chris Bonnett recommends covering outdoor kitchens with roofs or canopies, and positioning them to shield from wind and bright sunlight. Utensils and essentials require dry storage to prevent rust and dirt accumulation. Furniture should also be covered and sealed with a waterproof protector. Dee Fontenot suggests using airtight waterproof boxes for items during wet or windy weather, storing them in outdoor kitchen cupboards to keep them clean and ready for use when warm weather returns.
