A Breakfast Nook, an Outdoor Kitchen—Yep, This Tiny Pink RV Has Those
Carlene and Michael Duffy, interior designers known for renovating vintage caravans under their brand Cedar + Suede, have recently completed their fifth RV renovation, affectionately named Goldie. This project, detailed in their book 'This Old Van,' showcases innovative design solutions for maximizing space and comfort in a small living area, specifically a caravan that is 6 feet smaller than their previous one.
One of the most notable innovations in Goldie is the outdoor kitchen. Instead of a traditional indoor setup, the Duffys designed a full-size peninsula that slides out from under the main bed. This outdoor kitchen is equipped with a sink and utensil drawers, and its legs can be quickly screwed on for use. This design choice not only provides a spacious and functional cooking area but also frees up significant interior space within the RV. The main bed inside the van was raised to accommodate this pull-out counter mechanism, demonstrating a clever integration of indoor and outdoor functionality.
The flooring in Goldie also received a thoughtful upgrade. Moving away from their previous choice of wood-look vinyl, which was difficult to clean and uncomfortable, they opted for low-pile goat-hair carpeting. This material, commonly used in commercial spaces, is laid in square tiles. This modular approach allows for easy replacement of individual damaged sections, making maintenance simple and cost-effective. Furthermore, this type of carpeting is a lightweight option, which is crucial for RV design where weight is a significant consideration.
Accommodating their growing children, Paddy (14) and Stella (12), was another key design challenge. The Duffys ensured that the bunk beds provided adequate headroom for their teens to stretch their legs. Each bunk also features a small niche with a light for nighttime reading. The primary bunk is designed to fold up into the wall, similar to a Murphy bed, when not in use. This flexibility allows the area to be used for tables and chairs during travel, maximizing the usable space. For meals and games, a breakfast banquette spans the entire width of the RV's interior, offering ample seating that can even accommodate a fifth guest.
Storage solutions were also ingeniously incorporated. The elevated primary bed allowed for the creation of a set of drawers underneath for folded clothes. For Carlene, who prefers to hang her clothing, an old wardrobe was acquired from Facebook Marketplace for $50. This cabinet was customized with a rod and two shelves for shoes. Adjacent cubbies provide additional storage for smaller items like shorts, swimsuits, and socks, with the bottom drawer cleverly concealing a wheel arch.
Privacy and light control were addressed through a careful selection of window treatments. Carlene and Paddy's preference for complete darkness necessitated a solution that was both functional and aesthetically pleasing. They chose a combination of fabrics from Warwick and Walter G, ensuring a chic look from the outside while providing the desired light-blocking capabilities without unsightly blackout lining. Two internal curtains made from the same textiles were also added to provide privacy for changing.
To manage the inevitable sand accumulation from their frequent beach trips, the Duffys installed an outdoor shower on the exterior of the RV. This allows them to rinse off before entering the caravan, significantly reducing the amount of sand brought inside. This practical feature enhances the overall comfort and cleanliness of their mobile home, making their annual trips to destinations like Yamba and North Stradbroke Island more enjoyable.
