Closet Confidential: Step Inside This Dreamy Dressing Room
Interior designer Susan Ferrier, a partner at McAlpine, undertook the renovation of her 1920s Atlanta home, transforming what was originally a guest bedroom into a master closet. Initially, the space was disorganized, with clothes on rolling racks and jewelry in stackable bins. Ferrier sought the expertise of Calais McGuinness from California Closets to convert the room into a highly functional and aesthetically pleasing dressing area. The design was heavily influenced by her existing wooden blinds, which she maintained throughout the front-facing windows of her historic Tudor facade to ensure consistency.
McGuinness's design process began with a thorough analysis of Ferrier's daily routine and lifestyle. This detailed assessment led to personalized solutions, including dedicated space for a washer and dryer to accommodate her laundry habits, ample storage for luggage due to her frequent travel, and a comfortable seating area for checking emails. This approach ensured the closet was not merely a storage space but an integral part of her daily life.
A significant portion of the design focused on her extensive wardrobe and jewelry collection. McGuinness incorporated brass accents throughout the closet, which harmonized with the warm gray and glossy white finishes. Special attention was given to her jewelry, with hooks meticulously placed at the perfect height for various necklaces and custom-fitted drawers lined with black velvet for rings, bracelets, and earrings. The shoe closet, illuminated by LEDs, was designed to hold 70 to 80 pairs, with specialized sections for boots, heels, and flats.
The central feature of the closet is a custom-designed island, specified by Ferrier, featuring a thick, mink-colored leather counter with a waterfall edge, further enhanced by brass accents. Ferrier emphasizes the importance of honesty in closet design, stating that an accurate assessment of one's organizational habits is crucial for a successful outcome. The renovated closet significantly improved her daily routine, transforming it into a peaceful and efficient space where she spends the first two hours of her day, from getting ready to planning her schedule. A pop-up power station adds to the functionality, accommodating various electronic devices and a hair dryer.
