Gallery of Traditional Chinese Aesthetic Children's Space Under Kongming Lantern / Xisui Design - 5
The project involved transforming a large, empty area into a children's activity space, inspired by the traditional Chinese Kongming Lantern. The design aims to create a poetic and imaginative environment for children, moving beyond typical bright colors and cartoon characters often found in such spaces. The core concept revolves around the cultural significance of the Kongming Lantern, which symbolizes hope and blessing in traditional Chinese culture. This central element serves as a metaphor for nurturing children's dreams and aspirations within the space.
The initial challenge was the vastness and lack of existing structure in the original site, which presented both a blank canvas and a design hurdle. The design team sought to integrate traditional Chinese aesthetics with modern functionality, creating a unique identity for the children's area. The Kongming Lantern, chosen as the main design motif, is reinterpreted as an illuminated, large-scale structure that forms the primary visual and functional anchor of the space. This lantern is not merely decorative but acts as a central hub around which various activities are organized.
The space is divided into several functional zones, each designed to foster different aspects of child development while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic. These zones include areas for active play, quiet contemplation, creative expression, and social interaction. The overall color palette and material selection reflect traditional Chinese artistry, emphasizing natural tones, subtle patterns, and textures that evoke a sense of calm and heritage. The intention was to create a warm and inviting atmosphere that stimulates imagination without being overstimulating.
Lighting plays a crucial role in enhancing the atmospheric quality of the space. Inspired by the soft glow of actual Kongming Lanterns, the lighting design uses warm, diffused light sources to create a gentle and enchanting ambiance. This carefully planned illumination not only serves practical purposes but also contributes to the poetic narrative of the space, making it feel magical and dreamlike for children. Natural light is also maximized where possible, connecting the indoor environment with the outdoors and enhancing the sense of openness.
Throughout the design process, safety and durability were paramount considerations. All materials were chosen for their child-friendly properties, ensuring they are non-toxic, soft, and resilient to wear and tear. Furniture and play structures are designed with rounded edges and appropriate heights to prevent injuries, and the overall layout allows for clear lines of sight, enabling easy supervision. The project successfully blends cultural heritage with contemporary design principles, offering a thoughtful and enriching environment that supports children's holistic growth and development.
