The Basic Entryway Item That Instantly Makes Your Home Look Tacky, Designers Say

Entryways serve as the initial and final impression of a home for guests, setting the tone for the entire living space. According to Erin Hackett, a design expert at Village Design Studio, a common oversight that detracts from an entryway's appeal is the use of a small, basic doormat. These utilitarian doormats often appear as an afterthought, failing to integrate seamlessly with the home's overall design. Designers Erin Hackett and Meghan Hackett Cassidy emphasize that while doormats are functional for trapping dirt and moisture, a more aesthetically pleasing and equally effective alternative is a larger, well-sized area rug. An area rug can significantly enhance the entryway by defining the space, adding warmth and texture, and conveying a sense of intentional design. When selecting an area rug, it is crucial to choose durable materials like jute, similar to those found in traditional welcome mats, to withstand high foot traffic while maintaining its visual appeal. To create a balanced and welcoming entryway, designers suggest a minimalist approach, focusing on essential elements that maximize both function and style. The recommended setup includes a slim console table, preferably with built-in storage, to keep the space organized. Above the console, a mirror can be hung to not only allow for quick appearance checks before leaving but also to reflect natural light, making smaller entryways feel more open and spacious. Incorporating a bench or stool provides a convenient spot for seating while putting on or removing shoes. Updating the lighting is another critical step, as a well-chosen fixture can add character and align with the home's overall aesthetic. Finally, a large, durable area rug anchors the space, completing the cohesive and inviting look. By replacing a small doormat with a thoughtful combination of these elements, homeowners can transform their entryway from a mere pass-through area into a polished and functional extension of their living space, leaving a lasting positive impression on visitors. #EntrywayDesign #HomeDecor #InteriorDesignTips #AreaRugs #HomeStyling #DesignersAdvice #RoomDesign #SmallSpaces #HomeImprovement #EntrywayDesign #HomeDecor #InteriorDesignTips #AreaRugs #HomeStyling #DesignersAdvice #RoomDesign #SmallSpaces #HomeImprovement
