This 111-Year-Old Kitchen Countertop Material Is Making Major Gains with Gen-Z
Renovating a kitchen can be a challenging endeavor, often requiring compromises in budget and design choices. Among these, kitchen countertops frequently become a point of cost-cutting. While natural stone countertops have been popular for decades, their high cost and maintenance requirements have led to an increased interest in more affordable and durable alternatives such as engineered stone, butcher block, and laminate.
Laminate countertops, first introduced in the late 1920s and popular through the 1950s and 60s, saw a decline in popularity but are now experiencing a resurgence, particularly among younger generations. A recent study by Formica, a leading manufacturer of laminate surfaces, revealed a significant shift in perception: 86% of Gen-Z homeowners would consider laminate for their kitchen counters if it aligned with their budget and aesthetic preferences. This contrasts sharply with older generations, where only 56% of Boomers, 73% of Gen-X, and 78% of Millennials expressed similar openness.
The study suggests that this generational difference is largely due to Gen-Z's lack of prior exposure to older, less refined laminate products, meaning they don't associate the material with outdated or passé styles. Furthermore, younger generations are increasingly looking to historical periods for design inspiration, which plays into the revival of classic materials like laminate. Technological advancements in laminate manufacturing over the past two decades have also significantly improved its quality and aesthetic appeal.
Modern laminate products, such as Formica's FENIX line, offer ultra-matte finishes that are currently in vogue. The brand's granite-look 180fxTM offerings feature highly realistic veining, achieved through true-to-scale sizing, making them nearly indistinguishable from natural stone. These contemporary laminate surfaces also boast practical advantages, including durability and resistance to common kitchen spills like red wine and pasta sauce, offering a low-maintenance and competitively priced option for homeowners across all age groups.
