3 most popular interior decorating styles in Australia
The most beloved interior decorating styles in Australia, according to a survey of over fifty thousand individuals by Beaumont Tiles, are Scandinavian, classic traditional, and modern coastal. These styles play a significant role in establishing an emotional connection with potential buyers and renters, subtly communicating an entire lifestyle ethos.
Scandinavian design emerged as the top choice, with 17% of respondents favoring its minimalist aesthetic. This style is characterized by predominantly white color palettes that enhance natural light and liberal use of timber tones to introduce warmth. Christie Wood, a design specialist at Beaumont Tiles, notes that both Scandinavian and Coastal styles are popular among homeowners renovating their properties, as they both incorporate soft natural tones and utilize open spaces. Scandinavian styling is particularly dominant in new home builds, with 18% of respondents selecting it for new constructions. Its functionality and clean lines resonate with new home buyers, especially given the trend of reduced dwelling sizes.
Classic traditional style secured the second position, appealing to those who appreciate designs rooted in tradition, featuring antique furniture and formal layouts. This style emphasizes heritage details and often incorporates ornate patterns and furniture to add character to a home. Approximately 19% of respondents favored Classic Traditional for their own homes in the 'Renovation to Live' category, indicating its strong appeal to nearly 10,000 renovating Australians.
Modern coastal interiors, including beach house styles, ranked third. Given Australia's proximity to the ocean, this preference for coastal aesthetics is unsurprising. Modern coastal homes integrate warm textures like rattan and timber, alongside a crisp white palette, to capitalize on ocean views and promote a resort-like living experience. For property investors, the coastal style is highlighted as a key focus, with around 17% of respondents showing a preference for it in investment renovations. Adopting a coastal design can help investors create an emotional connection with renters, potentially maximizing their return on investment.
