Taking the plunge on a basement renovation — literally
This article details a basement renovation project that centered around the installation of a cold-water plunge pool, which evolved into a multi-functional spa area. The homeowners, Polina Keyhayova and her partner, initially intended the plunge pool for the partner's sauna-loving friends, inspired by his childhood experience with backyard saunas in Germany. Their existing makeshift cold-water dunk pool, crafted from a rainwater collection tank in the backyard, was deemed an "eyesore" by Keyhayova, prompting the idea of integrating a more aesthetically pleasing plunge pool into a finished basement.
Samuel Kachmar, principal of SKA architecture firm, embraced the design challenge. The project faced initial skepticism from the city of Cambridge authorities due to the unusual nature of an indoor plunge pool. To ensure structural integrity and prevent water seepage, a French drain was installed around the basement's perimeter. The construction involved cutting and jackhammering the concrete floor to lay the pool's foundation and plumbing for its circulation system.
The completed 5-foot-deep plunge pool features a marine blue glass mosaic tile interior and a limestone tile surround. The choice of glass tiles was deliberate, creating a sparkling effect when illuminated, reminiscent of natural sunlight on outdoor pool water. To complement the pool's design, feature walls made from western red cedar, a material known for its water resistance, were installed to bookend the 13-foot-long pool. An integrated western red cedar bench was also included for lounging, alongside a walk-in shower with sliding glass doors, enhancing the spa-like atmosphere of the renovated space.
Initially, the owners did not plan to connect the plunge pool's heater. However, as the scope of the project expanded with additional amenities, the appeal of a heated plunge pool grew, particularly for Keyhayova and her 13-year-old daughter. With her partner's approval, the heater is now occasionally used, offering a warm alternative for those who prefer not to transition directly from a hot sauna to cold water. The heated option has also gained popularity among the hardcore sauna enthusiasts who frequent their home.
The renovation transformed the previously "dungeon-like" basement into a "standalone spa," exceeding Keyhayova's initial expectations. The project successfully combined the partner's passion for sauna culture with Keyhayova's desire for an elegant and functional space, creating an enjoyable oasis for both family and friends. The article highlights the innovative approach to home improvement, transforming an underutilized basement into a luxurious and unexpected amenity.
