Kitchen Makeover: New countertops, sink and backsplash key to a home renovation

This blog post details a kitchen renovation project undertaken by the author, Marni Jameson, focusing on cosmetic updates rather than a full remodel. The primary objective was to refresh a 20-year-old kitchen that the author had long desired to change. The article differentiates between a renovation, which maintains the existing footprint, and a remodel, which involves structural changes and appliance relocation. The author initially hesitated due to the perceived complexity, time commitment, financial implications, and potential for conflict, but eventually decided to proceed with the project. The renovation began with consulting interior designer Sally Ward, who helped develop a practical plan. Key decisions included retaining the dark walnut cabinets to save costs, but updating the hardware with polished-nickel knobs and pulls. The project also involved making all counters a single height to improve sight lines and create a more modern aesthetic. Only necessary appliances, such as the cooktop and dishwasher, were replaced. The old stainless-steel sink was upgraded to a larger, white cast-iron sink with a distinctive polished-nickel faucet. Furthermore, the existing brown Santa Cecilia granite countertops were replaced with a light cream stone material, specifically creamy quartzite with an eased edge. The backsplash replacement was strategically postponed until after the new countertops were installed to allow for better visualization of options. The author took on the role of general contractor, guided by Ward's expertise in sourcing materials and professionals. The renovation process, while ultimately successful, involved several challenges, including power outages due to tool usage, temporary water shut-offs, and significant noise and dust. Despite these disruptions, the author expressed satisfaction with the final outcome, noting how the updated kitchen transformed the feel of the entire house. The article concludes with practical advice for others considering home improvement projects. Firstly, it emphasizes the importance of finding a compatible designer who can offer guidance, validate good ideas, and prevent poor decisions. Secondly, it advises homeowners to undertake only tasks they are skilled at, leaving professional work to experts, while saving money on simpler tasks like changing hardware. Thirdly, it stresses the importance of designing in harmony with the existing home's aesthetic, rather than simply replicating magazine or TV show designs. Fourthly, it recommends having all materials and workers lined up before starting demolition to avoid delays and disruptions. Finally, the author advises preparing for potential disruptions and difficulties, as renovations often come with unexpected challenges. Overall, the article serves as a personal account and guide for navigating a kitchen renovation, highlighting both the aesthetic benefits and the practical considerations involved. #KitchenRenovation #HomeImprovement #InteriorDesign #CountertopUpgrade #SinkReplacement #HomeMakeover #RenovationAdvice #DesignTips #KitchenRenovation #HomeImprovement #InteriorDesign #CountertopUpgrade #SinkReplacement #HomeMakeover #RenovationAdvice #DesignTips
