Natural Light, Roman Clay, and Ocean Breezes: A Peek at Our Plans for the Malibu Bedroom
This article details the design plans for a primary bedroom and bathroom in a Malibu beach house, emphasizing a minimalist, calming, and nature-connected aesthetic inspired by Japandi design principles. The renovation project has been ongoing for five years, with significant focus on creating spaces that offer a serene experience, particularly the primary bedroom. The author envisions quiet mornings, natural light, ocean breezes, and the scent of orange blossoms as key elements of the finished space.
The bedroom design features a custom-built, low-platform bed made from natural wood, which integrates seamlessly into the room's architecture. This built-in bed includes extended nightstand ledges, eliminating the need for separate furniture and maintaining a clean, simple visual. Overhead, woven pendant lights are chosen instead of traditional bedside lamps to free up surface space and add sculptural interest, while providing a warm, downward glow for reading. The article highlights the selection of specific woven pendant options that align with the natural theme.
A significant design element is the installation of French doors that open directly onto an ocean-facing patio. These natural wood-framed doors are intended to blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing sea air and wave sounds to permeate the room. The patio will also connect to an outdoor sauna, transforming the suite into a personal wellness retreat. The design incorporates vaulted ceilings throughout the home, including the primary bedroom, to enhance the sense of airiness and openness. The material palette for the bedroom is deliberately kept light, using warm neutral textiles, light-toned woods, and soft stone finishes to reinforce the natural and calming atmosphere.
For the fireplace, a VITA Vapor fireplace from Custom Fireplace & Design is chosen due to local restrictions on open flames in Malibu. This electric fireplace provides the ambiance of a real fire through flickering vapor, serving as a soothing focal point at the foot of the bed. The primary bathroom is conceived as a serene, light-filled sanctuary. A freestanding Duravit Soleil by Starck bathtub, characterized by its simple and sculptural lines, is a central feature. Adjacent to the tub, a floor-to-ceiling window brings in ample natural light, with privacy ensured by an exterior stone wall made from Country Rubble in Bella by Eldorado Stone.
The wall finish throughout the house is planned to be Roman Clay from Portola Paints. While a soft terracotta was initially considered for the bathroom, a cleaner white Roman Clay was ultimately selected for its ability to reflect light and expand the space, creating a spa-like feel. The texture of the Roman Clay adds depth and an organic, handmade quality without appearing stark. Unlacquered brass fixtures from Kallista’s One collection are specified for the bathroom, valued for their warm tones and their ability to develop a natural patina over time, embodying a wabi-sabi aesthetic.
To optimize space and flow in the bathroom, a small set of doors leading to the primary closet will be removed and replaced with an arched opening. This architectural detail contributes to the suite's expansive feel and complements the natural materials and curved forms elsewhere in the design. Custom floating vanities will flank the arched doorway, featuring Caesarstone tops (specifically Mirabel) and white oak drawers for storage. The closet itself is designed as a streamlined, hardworking space, equipped with pull-out organizers, soft-close drawers, and integrated lighting, and will house a vanity table. The shower area will utilize tadelakt, a traditional waterproof plaster with a smooth, mottled, stone-like appearance, for its walls. The shower floor will feature a slip-resistant Caesarstone surface, ensuring material consistency with other areas of the house. Finally, a wall-mounted ME by Starck toilet from Duravit is chosen for its sleek, minimal, and functional design, adding a touch of everyday luxury.
