California Cool Meets Swiss Precision In This Beach Home

Architect David Montalba, known for his work along the Malibu coastline and in Santa Monica and Lausanne, designed a beachfront getaway retreat, dubbed the “Graoni house,” for a couple with college-age children. This project, technically a renovation, involved stripping the two-story interior to the studs and recladding the exterior with a charred-wood rainscreen, effectively transforming it into a new build. Montalba Architects collaborated with designer Cliff Fong, principal and founder of Matt Blacke studio, on this 2,950-square-foot, three-bedroom residence. The couple, described as "huge design enthusiasts," had previous design relationships with both Montalba and Fong, having worked with Fong on several residences over 30 years, including a semi-brutalist steel, glass, and concrete structure in Beverly Hills, and with Montalba on an L.A. store featuring polished concrete, rough stucco, and exposed ceiling beams. The Malibu house was intended to be the “alter ego of Beverly Hills,” focusing on an organic, cozy, and inviting aesthetic that was chic yet unostentatious, allowing the family to relax. It embodies a blend of California cool and Swiss precision. The structure, perched over 16 feet above current sea level, consists of two stacked, terraced volumes made of glass, steel, and wood. The exterior features vertical pine fins blackened with shou sugi ban charring, which helps the house integrate with its natural surroundings while adding a dramatic touch. The interior predominantly uses blond wood, including wire-brushed Douglas fir planks for floors and ceilings, white-oak cabinetry, and light-toned stonework. The entry sequence is meticulously designed. The entry court, located at the back of the property, is defined by a charred-wood gate and a dark plastered retaining wall, creating a compressed space that contrasts with the expansive views inside. Upon entering the main living area, a 180-degree natural panorama unfolds, with the ocean visible through glass walls flanking a large stone fireplace. To the left, an undeveloped bluff appears close, and a secluded courtyard is visible through an adjoining den. The kitchen and dining area, extending towards the water, can merge seamlessly with the full-width beachfront deck via retractable floor-to-ceiling glazing. The interior spaces possess a strong aesthetic appeal. The living area features a monumental fireplace crafted from rough-cut granite, meticulously calibrated by the architect. Furnishings include a live-edge walnut cocktail table and a Hans Wegner CH-22 teak armchair. The dining area includes Pierre Jeanneret’s teak-and-cane Chandigarh chairs and a 19th-century French pine table. The kitchen incorporates a hidden, pocket-sized bar with marble, brass, and oak, and a powder room with John Pawson’s minimalist stone-column sink and faucet, reflecting Montalba’s focus on bespoke detailing. A stairwell, lined with shelves for art objects and topped with operable clerestories, is concealed behind the kitchen wall. Upstairs, the main bedroom suite is structured into three parts. The sleeping area, which opens to its own oceanfront deck, is connected to a large walk-in closet that also functions as a small office, featuring a live-edge surface in a window nook. This leads to a spa-like bathroom, clad in Brechia di Nola marble. Two additional bedrooms and bathrooms accommodate guests or family members. Construction delays due to COVID provided ample time for Fong to curate the furnishings, mixing vintage and contemporary pieces with the owners’ existing collection, creating a personalized and characterful ensemble. #MalibuBeachfront #LuxuryHome #CoastalDesign #MontalbaArchitects #MattBlackeStudio #ShouSugiBan #InteriorDesign #RenovationProject #ModernArchitecture #MalibuBeachfront #LuxuryHome #CoastalDesign #MontalbaArchitects #MattBlackeStudio #ShouSugiBan #InteriorDesign #RenovationProject #ModernArchitecture
