Shea McGee Has Loved This Faucet Style Since Her Very First Reno

Shea McGee, cofounder of Studio McGee, collaborated with Kohler to create an exclusive collection of faucets, showerheads, vanities, and accessories. The collection, which will be available online starting October 2 and in stores September 29, aims to balance old and new designs. McGee and Kohler’s industrial designer, Margaret Mazz, drew inspiration from Kohler’s archives, including black-and-white catalogs from 1914 to 1931. McGee noted that she sought a "sweet spot" in design, incorporating details like coining, engraving, and glass ribbing, as opposed to the extremes of overly contemporary or traditional styles often found in the market. McGee shared her approach to selecting kitchen and bathroom fixtures. For bathrooms, she recommends matching all plumbing fixtures within the same collection and finish, such as faucets and showerheads. This consistency allows for greater flexibility in mixing finishes for other elements like lighting and cabinet hardware. Regarding kitchen design, McGee expressed her enduring preference for bridge faucets, noting their timeless appeal and practical benefits. She highlighted that bridge faucets provide a significant presence at the sink area and, in the case of her collection, include a side spray for added functionality. McGee's first home, which played a role in the inception of Studio McGee, featured a Kohler bridge faucet, underscoring her long-standing appreciation for this style. The article also delves into McGee’s opinions on specific design elements, including matte black finishes and pot fillers. She observed that matte black can be versatile but its longevity depends on the surrounding design elements. She cautioned against pairing it with overly trendy or monochromatic black-and-white schemes, suggesting that integrating softer elements like oak tones can prevent the finish from looking dated prematurely. On the topic of pot fillers, McGee acknowledged that they can be controversial but emphasized their dual purpose: functionality and aesthetic appeal. She explained that pot fillers can fill the gap between a range and a hood, adding an architectural element to the kitchen, and are practical for tasks like filling large pots on the stove. Finally, McGee offered practical advice for hanging pendant lamps over kitchen islands. She advised a height range of 34 to 42 inches above the tabletop, depending on the ceiling height, with 36 inches serving as a good starting point. She recommended holding the pendant in place and stepping back to assess if adjustments are needed. Overall, the collaboration reflects McGee's design philosophy of blending classic elements with modern sensibilities, providing consumers with a collection that is both stylish and functional, based on her extensive experience in home renovation and design. #SheaMcGee #Kohler #InteriorDesign #BathroomFixtures #KitchenFixtures #HomeRenovation #DesignTips #ProductCollection #Faucets #SheaMcGee #Kohler #InteriorDesign #BathroomFixtures #KitchenFixtures #HomeRenovation #DesignTips #ProductCollection #Faucets
